As I felt pretty ridiculous asking such a question (frame diameter), this thread got me thinking: Seems when people own the xj 550, it gets names like "Bastard Child", "The Mutt" (as you see from one poster here, "The Rooster", and mine is "Road Rash". It was going to be Deer Slayer as my buddy liked calling it... but I don't want it slaying anymore deer... don't care how cool killing a deer with a bike seems...
I am just curious what other people might have dubbed their bikes... whatever type, make, displacement, year, etc.

Figured this thread is better than what I originally posted... "Gee george, duh, how big are the tooby thingies that hold your wheels...

Solved: The handlebars are 7/8 but is the frame 7/8 as well? Sorry to be posting such a question in the forums but I need an answer pretty quick here. Need to know if I need 7/8 inch clamps or 1 inch clamps. These are for the side cover area of the frame. Thanks, and sorry again for such a lame question.

Re: Frame diameter for 550 maxim?

Sorry If I was at home by my garage i'd run out there with my calipers right now haha. another question that i have taht kind of relates to tube size. I also have a 550 how much different are the frames between 550, 650, 750 etc. are any of them interchangable?

Re: Frame diameter for 550 maxim?

Well... my bike is about 20 minutes away from me in our shop and i am actually working. With my job, I have a little time here and there to run home or do a thing or two but not enough time to run to the shop... If i got a call while i was there I would be way too late getting back. but I am like 3 blocks away from Rivco products and need the diameter size for the clamps I am getting. I am almost positive it is a 7/8 in tube but I would hate to be wrong on a non-refundable item.

Re: Frame diameter for 550 maxim?

I'll be in my garage next to my dial caliper and my 550 tonight. It's a seca but the frame diameter should be the same. If I remember I'll check and post up for you.

Re: Frame diameter for 550 maxim?

Thanks! I feel rediculous for asking but I won't be back in the shop for a couple of days and when I get a project idea in my head, I am one-track-minded and impatient. Haha.

I know the feeling, been constantly thinking about what I want to do to my bike next now that I have a garage to work on it in for the winter.

yea, mines been evolving over the course of the past 4 or 5 years now. I'm doing a complete tear-down and re-paint over the next few months. I don't think it will ever be finished. As my tastes change so do my ideas for the bike. Where in Wisco are you?

Re: Frame diameter for 550 maxim?

I actually live down by milwaukee in Burlington. I have ridden up by your area a few times. Haha... I did my basic rider course in Oshkosh and rode there and back on Hwy 41 3 days in a row.

Re: Frame diameter for 550 maxim?

ok, I head down by Milwaukee quite a bit. Went to school in WW and most of the guys moved to Milwaukee after school. I hate driving 41 though. Esp on the bike, I usually try to take county roads and whatnot. more fun and less traffic.

I just checked the frame and all tubing around where the side covers go are 1" o.d. tubing.

    Recycled thread...
Name that bike. I call mine "Road Rash" because it is exactly what the condition of that bike was by the time I got it in the garage for the winter.

I'm calling mine the Phoenix. When I picked it up it didn't run at all. Got it running good rode it all last 2 seasons. Pulled and cracked open the engine this last fall to fix a chain guide. Repainting the tank black with a firey Phoenix rising up on it.

No it was not in a fire like TIME's 'Toast' bikes 8O

I named my bike "Frankenbike" because it was built from several other xj's and has a purple frame(which I'm repainting this year) and lime time pearl tank and side panels. Also painting the fenders the lime time pearl lol
I also have a frankenstein monster painted on tank and side panels

I like the "Trooper". That is basically what these bike are. They hang in there for the long haul with reasonable maintenance. The FJ600 I had for a couple of months was dubbed "The Nag".
