I have an 82 XJ750 maxim. The gas tank is in bad shape, several dents, full of rust and has some holes in it. I can weld and braze the holes and try to fix the dents. maybe even boil out the rust in the machine shop at work. I would rather just replace the tank, but i can't find any. What other tank will work on this bike? I do not mind some modifications but nothing to crazy.

    Thanks, Scott.

The only one I know for sure (may be others) would be a 650. They are smaller though (less gas)...

The tanks from the 750 Seca is a direct swap, and bigger (holds more gas) if you like the looks. Just a thought.

I wouldn't call it a "direct" swap - as they're different shapes, and it will look distinctly out of place on a Maxim. Can be done though....

You could epoxy the holes after a good cleanout with Muratic then baking soda and use it with an automotive inline filter and wait for a deal on the one you want. Ride and save.

Atlas, the tanks form the Seca and Maxim (750s) are both mounted the same. They are a direct swap with no modifications. Plug and play.
The Seca tank however is one butt ugly tank and will do nothing for the looks of the Maxim.

650 and 750 tanks turn up on ebay pretty regularly, usually around $50ish give or take. or you can grab one when someone is parting out a bike here, which is like every other week.

Right now I have three tanks.... a 750 (gonna be my main tank once I get the rust out), a 650 in pretty nice condition (in case I ever want my bike sharp and stock) and the stock 650 tank on the bike now-- dented, some outside rust, old pinstriping, no holes, plan to get rid of it once the 750 tank is all cleaned up.
