    Thanks Len!

I was having starter problems on Sweet Scarlet. The starter would wind up but not engage the clutch intermittently. It initially was an inconvenience as the clutch would engage the crank on the 3rd or 4th try. But last week the clutch got to the point of not engaging at all and I had to push start (bump start) Scarlet a couple of times, not a fun prospect for this skinny old fart with a bike that out weighed me by about 4.5 to 1. So I was about to bite the bullet and get the engine pulled, split and starter rebuilt. I contacted Len Chacal at XJ 4 Ever (info@xj4ever.com<mailto:info@xj4ever.com>) to find out what I would need to get the job done and what likely would need to be worked on and replaced. This is what Len sent me:

    >Condolences regarding the starter motor, but...........

Before you replace or rebuild the starter motor, are you sure that the problem is the motor instead of the STARTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY (which is what the gear on the end of the starter motor engages into). Unlike automotive starters, where the solenoid physically re-locates the starter motor gear into the flywheel, these starters ALWAYS stay "engaged" with the starter clutch geear, and the starter clutch works on a centrifugal basis, only operating the starter shaft via the starter motor, and "free-
wheeling" the rest of the time. There are three spring-loaded pins and caps within the starter clutch that should engage and "lock" the starter clutch to the starter shaft (thus turning over the engine) and then freewheel when the starter motor stops turning.

You may wish to further diagnose the "starter motor vs. starter clutch" issue by swapping a known good starter motor onto this engine, and see if the issue follows the starter motor, or whether a known operational starter motor gets you the same results on this engine (meaning, a starter CLUTCH problem).

Starter clutch assemblies can suffer from a few problems:

    a) use of the wrong type of oil, one with a lot of friction modifiers (automotive grade
"friction-reducing" oils, which provide too much friction reduction, and don't allow
the starter clutch springs/pins to retract properly.

    b) worn out starter clutch springs and/or pins.

    c) a cracked starter clutch housing.

    d) crudded and or sludge-restricted clutch pins/caps, which prevent them from engaging and locking the starter shaft.

USUALLY it's issue "a" above, in which case the solution is to flush the incorrect oil (may take a couple of tries) from the engine.

Or if it's situation "d", then using the "Seafoam" product in the crankcase once or twice may free up and clean the sludge or crud from the starter clutch assembly enough to get things going again.

Situations "b" or "c" means the starter clutch needs to be rebuilt or replaced, which
is a real chore when the engine is together.<

Well Saturday 1/16/2010 I did a double purge of the oil. I added a can of Seafoam to the crank, idled for 10minutes, drained the oil, changed oil filter, refilled the crank case with 3 quarts of 10-30W oil, added another can of Seafoam, idled for 10 minutes drained, changed oil filter, put in 3 quarts of 10-40W Mobile 1 Motorcycle oil and voila, starter caught every time I started Scarlet.

I took Sweet Scarlet on a 235 mile road trip yesterday afternoon with my son on the Gray Ghost. We hit Texas Ranch Road 207 which winds through the escarpment that forms Palo Duro Canyon on the west and Caprock Canyons on the east (great riding temps in the upper 50s to low 60sF). No starter problems the entire trip with several starts and stops on the way. This morning, there was a brief hesitation in catching but the starter caught and Scarlet fired up. I think I will repeat the process again in the next week or two to see if I can free up any more gunk and flush it out. I definitely will go back to 1500 mile oil changes (I had gone to 3000mile oil changes after I converted Scarlet over to the Spin-on Oil Filter Adapter from XJ Forever).

What a reflection of business integrity Len Chacal is. I was about to drop 2-3 C notes for parts and likely another 5C notes for mechanic time and Len gives me a fix that cost me 70 bucks in oil, filters and an hour of my time. Len didn’t make any money on the exchange but gave me an effective fix. Len is a Guru when it comes to insights on the insides of these fine machines. I have bought parts from Len for going on 3 years now and I will continue to do so. He is a great resource for parts and knowledge. Two thumbs up to you Len!!!

Yet again, I have nothing but great things to say about conducting business with chacal. The quotation, transaction and delivery of parts took less than 3 days, one of which was a Sunday. It wouldn't be a stretch for me to say that chacal has been one of the best businessmen I've ever dealt with.

    Thanks again, Len!

Chacal, got all the carby bits, thanks!

I was amazed how quickly the parts got here to Australia. Also the quality of the fasteners was 1st class.

The forum posts were great. I've got a Haynes manual but its a bit vague in places. The posts made de-racking and rebuilding the carbs easy...apart from the many hours of cleaning :)

Any other XJers in South Australia, forget Yamaha dealers for carb bits. If u can get them you'll need really deep pockets. As for aftermarket, mention Mikuni for XJ to the aftermarket guys and watch their eyes glaze over.... even with postage from the US, Chacal's prices are pretty good!
