Can someone take a picture of their carbs so that I can see how the vaccum and fuel lines are routed. It would be very helpfull. Thank you in advance.

Try looking under the seat if the sticker is still there. Mine as a diagram of the fuel line routing.

Right now I have all three parts to the seat being recovered. So I am out of luck there.

Sorry bud!!!! I realized it after doing my fuel lines when putting the seat back on that there was a sticker there for routing the fuel lines ...

Is there anything specific you want to see?

The fuel line dips from the petcock/tank in between carb body 2 and 3 to the T connector in between them. The vacuum line from the petcock goes straight to the vacuum port on the intake manifold of the 3rd carb.

I wanted to know if there were any other lines going to the carbs.

    Just those two.

There are line that head away from the carbs. Those are vent/drain hoses though for gas overflow.

OK where do the over flow lines go, because they are not on my carbs. Also shouldn't there be clamps on the air tubes from the air box to carbs. This is why I was asking about pictures of the carbs preferably on the bike in working order. You know maybe someone could just lift their tank and take a couple of snap shots. What size overflow lines are they and where do they route to? I will be very thankful to who ever could give me the answewrs.

Hmm, well I don't have an airbox any more but yes, the air tubs should be clamped to the carbs and fit snugly in to the air box.

The drains and vents are harder to explain, so a picture would be best. I can tell you that I took all the vents/drains off and rode my bike for more than 4000 miles and it's fine.

Worry about the air tubes being clamped down and proper fuel line routing and you'll be fine.

    Hi strick
Like mestnii said the fuel overflow lines -2 of them-i suppose from carb 3 & 4 (you will see connectors right at the carb)and runs down the frame..look at the pictures /arrows i have indicated..check the gallery as well for more info. Its behind the airbox(topview)/clutch cable (sideview)running along the frame. Sorry i dont hav any better picture and its in storage. Good luck.

To be honest, any home depot/hardware store will have the clamps you need.

Also, is there a consensus on whether the drains/vents are useful? Mine haven't been on the carbs in a long time and no adverse affects (except, ok, minor gas spills which I'm assuming are from going through sharp turns).

Littlegiant, your first picture actually depicts the routing for the battery overflow tube which is clear (and basically unecessary)

Not sure on the second picture

The overflow tubes come from betweeen carbs 1&2 and 3&4. They are just straight tubes that route to the rear. If routed correctly (again, these are not totally necessary, my x doesn't have them anymore) they would fit under the front side of the air box.

Other than the main fuel line (which should have a clear fuel filter in it, preferably a 90 degree one ease the tension on the line and for easier installing on the carbs/tank) and the other line goes from the petcock to the carbs...now, that is a topic for discussion as it has been said that that line goes to either no 2 carb or no 3 carb.

I've tried both carb ports, and it appears, *appears* that no. 2 is the better selection. I believe that is the stock setting as well.

1: The carb-to-airbox boot clamps are narrower than most common-variety clamps, you may want to go with the correct ones (they're not expensive.)

2: On most of the "bigger" XJs they ran the petcock vacuum line off the #3 carb. On the 550s it came off #2.

WHY they used #3 on the other bikes remains a mystery, as #2 seems to be a better choice...

Thank you guys for the fast reply. I thought that the clamps were needed but was not sure. I rode all last season without the clamps on (what time I was home (army missions)during the season) with out to many problems other than sucking alot of gas. Not to change the subject But I read on here that if you disconnect the fuel line it should not leak fuel. Every time I take my tank off it poors so I have to drain the tank. I have put a rebuild kit in it but it still leaks. Do I need to find another petcock or try another kit?

Strick...your fuel petcock, is it set to 'prime', 'on' or 'res'? Res and on should have no fuel coming out. Prime, well, you'll have your hands full of gas.

I was up against a wall trying to find my carb clamps...my buddy had an extra set of xj550 clamps, so I tried them. They work, it's a snug fit, but they work.

I wonder if some automotive hose clamps will work?
