question about cyl. head part

    hey all,
    When I took the cyl. head off my '81 XJ650 Maxim, there were these cylindrical washers around the long bolts the cyl. head sits on. They were fairly disintegrated and I had to pick them out with tweezers. Their function seems to be to create a seal along the long engine bolts between the cyl. head and the engine block. I tried to find them on chacal's catalog pages but no luck. It would help if I knew what they were called.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    ^ Thats what he's talking about, and that site has them (though I'd be suprised if chacal didn't have them, try PMing him).

    They are important especially on the two on the far right side of the engine. Those two far right ones are oil studs, and the washer under those two nuts makes a seal. They are specific to the job, and you will leak oil without them.

    (You'll see that there are two different skus for the washers in the parts catalog, 10 of one and 2 of the other)

    I'm telling you from experience, I tried to subsitute them with hardware store washers, and I leak from under the nuts. It's very little and "dealable", but there is always an oil stain around them...

    No, I know about the copper washers under the two outside cap nuts, along with the street ones under the other cap nuts.
    The things I've talking about were made of thin plastic and are tube shaped, wrapped around the long main bolts the cyl. head goes onto and are situated where the head meets the engine block.

    Those "Sleeves" were placed on the Cyl Block's long studs to help facilitate the Assembly process.

    They allowed the Block to be set-on over the Studs without the Stud's Threads ... "Catching" and getting marred.

    They were basically like cheap heat-shrink tubing.
    You don't need 'em.

    That's not what I thought Baz was talking about.
    I thought he meant the Sleeves around the long studs.

    He did say "cylindrical washers" but what the hey, it doesn't hurt to clarify that the gaskets I indicated are essential.

    Here here Wiz, best bet is to eliminate any confusion. Especially considering the outcome otherwise!
    I'll back both gentlemen up Baz, you NEED the two washers on the end but don't need the head stud plastic "sleeves" (a.k.a. doodads).

    Thanks for all your help, guys. Chacal also explained the thing about the sleeves used during assembly, which are different than the dowel gaskets used on the outside studs. I'll be ordering the whole crankcase to cyl. head mating kit from him, gaskets, dowels, etc.
    He also has a heat gun and shrink tubing if you really want to replace those sleeves. But as Rick says, they're not necessary.
