Just bought back my original 1983 Silver Seca with factory fairings and side bags after 15 years. Does anyone know where to get build information? How many with and without fairing, etc?

I've tried to do similar research on the 550 Seca, with chacal's help.

There's not a whole lot of info out there; "fishing" for serial numbers and corresponding build dates is a place to start.

Here's some interesting reading, and may tell you a BIT about your bike, but I suspect that figuring out how many 750s had the "full factory touring" package is going to be nigh on impossible. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html

Send chacal a PM (if he doesn't see this) and see what he knows.

Or send Yamaha a letter. (They never responded to mine.)

    Welcome Trailmacs !!
Another member Micro sent me some info while I was putting together my touring stuff. This stuff was made in Canada, has SAE (english) bolts and threads, and was all dealer installed. Not exactly "factory" but labeled "genuine Yamaha accessories" And, the stuff has a printed date code in small white letters.
Micro sent me the installation instructions. I don't know how many were made.

Production numbers from this era are difficult and questionable for two reasons: 1) they were always closely-held secrets, and 2) actual motorcycle sales were in free-fall.

I was in the industry at the time. According to the MIC (Motorcycle Industry Council), total motorcycle sales in 1980 were about 2 million units - that includes ATVs, dirt bikes, street bikes etc. By 1985, that number had fallen to 200,000. One TENTH the size!

Warehouses were packed with 'non-current' motorcycles. In 1982, I rode a 650 Seca to Alaska. Loved that bike, and wanted to buy it at the end of the test for the magazine. Yamaha offered it to me for $2800, down from retail of $3200. Sheesh... it was rough from the trip, had bald tires and had over 10,000 miles on it, so I passed.

Later, I bought that same 1982 model bike brand new in 1985 for $1600 out the door from a local dealer.

I know there were over 1000 of the 1982 Yamaha Visions that were sold to a guy who converted them to three-wheelers. Yamaha vastly overproduced the Vision.

Look back at all the models from that era, from all the Big 4 makers. A huge lineup of products: street bikes, sport bikes and cruisers, turbos, tourers, and by 1986 everybody had regained sanity and product lines were slashed.
