Ok, so I bought my XJ650 in the fall and the only time I drove it was the test drive, to load it on my trailer and drive into my house to store for the winter. I'm trying to restore it and noticed that the hole in the master cylinder where the mirror screws into is stripped. I filled it with JB weld and haven't yet drived and tapped the hole out yet. Pretty certain the brakes both front and back are in good working order from my test drive. I was just wondering if this master cylinder that is advertised on eBay will fit my 82 XJ650 Maxim. Here is the ad http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... ink:top:en
I think this master cylinder would look great on my bike and the mirror would pop right on there. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Well - I'm sure you could make that one work, but it won't be quite right -- it's designed for much different handlebars.

I'd say you should see about a new one from our own Chacal - see his parts list -
    Chacal's List - Section J
or from Mike's XS site (much of the XS parts fit our XJ's)
    Mike's XS master cylinders

Thanks Altus, I did change out my handle bars. I found a nice pair at a local motorcycle shop for $22.00 that aren't the ram horn style that was originally on my bike, now they are more straight back not sloped down. I will check out chacal's parts and the Mike's XS site too......Thanks! I just liked that chrome look on the one listed on eBay......looks much cleaner then my old weather beaten black master cylinder. Thanks again Altus!

    NO NO no no no!

You CANNOT tell by "feel" the rear brake could be ready to delaminate and you won't know it until it happens and LOCKS YOUR REAR WHEEL.

You MUST take it apart and check!

Read the replies to my thread; it has happened, and more than once!

Mine (the brake pictured) FELT fine, I even rode the bike a bit before I discovered it. I'm VERY GLAD I discovered it before it wrecked me!

You have to do what is necessary to assure you will be safe.
(I hope you didn't think the MC Mirror Moune was stripped when Yamaha makes that mount with reversed (Left-handed) threads).

You can do a visual on the Front Brakes.
    The Pads have a notch.
Start-off YOUR Bike adventures on a set of New Pads.

    Rear Brakes ... too.
Take the time to overhaul the rear Brakes.
Sand-down any Rust Ridge on the Drum with a Dremel and Fine or Med. Sanding Bit.
    Install New Shoes and Springs
Clean and Lube the Cam Rod and Bushing.
    (Grease. Synthetic-Waterproof)

Assemble and adjust the Brake to have 2 or 3 mm's of Free Play but adjust the Brake Light Switch tight so the Brake Lights come-on before you slow down.

Yeah, I figured out the reverse thing with the mirror when I had to adjust the left side mirror. The threads are just stripped though on the right side so bad that the mirror just flops around in there. I will be sure to check my brake pads too.
