i have a 82 xj650 that i just recently aquired as a b-day gift from the wife and do not know what to do with it. I have already put drag bars on it and changed the turnsignals out for much smaller ones. The next thing i plan to do is put bar end mirrors on it. I am not sure if i want a bobber or just lower it what should i do? also what size jets should i go with, it has pods and a short 4 in to 2 exhaust and runs very rich and i plan to change the exhaust to 4 shotgun style.

    Re: what to do?

If you have pods, a free flow exhaust and you're running rich, congratulations!
Most spend weeks/months, trying to accomplish this feat.
Try doing some plug chops and turning your enrichment screws in a tad.

    Re: what to do?

The stock tail light does look a bit out of place on that bike as it sits. However I like folks to know I'm stopping. :D

    I like the paint

Wow.. that sounded sweet!.. more pics of what you hooked up would be great!

edit: helps if I read back and see what I missed. But some more detail on how you hooked the exhaust would be great. Did you have to rejet for the exhaust?

very niiiice!!! sweet sound on the exhaust. Does it really have that low rumble at idle like it sounds on the vid, or is it a little higher pitch in person? If your vids are real life sound...i may have to re-think the exhaust on my project xj... I really like the look of the turn-outs too!!
I noticed in your pics of the frame work, you didn't replace the cross brace when you dropped the seat pan rails... I'm no engineer...(oh wait 8O yes I am..lol just not a motorcycle engineer  ) When I dropped the seat pan rails on my project bike I did replace that brace. I figure if a team of design engineers felt it was needed then who am I to argue.....I know that brace limits wheel travel, but so will your fender, unless you have a fender that 'floats' with your swingarm...it's your call, just thinking about the safety factor...But still you did an excellent job!! post some pics of the fender in daylight. That looks pretty cool on there!! Good job!!

thanks for the post and it does sound that low in real life and as far as the cross brace i figured that the still fender would be good enough do to the fact that it is stronger than the old one and will post new pics soon

Can you post larger pics. My eyes suck when it comes to looking at the smaller pics. Thanks man. IMHO, I kinda dig the flame paint. Old school paint for an old school bike.

I have a time fram of about 2 months and plenty of work to keep me buzzie. I have already torn the bike down to a bare roller. i plan to smooth the farme, paint and ploish the motor and im going to sand blast most chrome parts and paint them. i have decided to go black with ploished accents. also have to come up with a new exhaust do to the fact my brother killed the other, and a note for any one planning on removing the engine remove the oil filter first.. will post pic of progress as it happens

Wondered what happened to you? Glad you're back 8) ! First off, black with polished accents sounds GOOD. Second, how does one "kill" an exhaust? Third, did you kill brother  ???

I really like what you've done so far with the bike!
Just wondering just how loud it is while flying down the interstate? I always thought these bikes were annoying at high speeds with loud exhaust and eventually made my ears ring and gave me a headache. I rode mine down town between the large buildings and it really wailed when I got on the throttle! I guess it all depends where you ride with that kind of exhaust on it.

My buddy has an 82' Maxim 650 with the 4-2 stock exhaust. He cut the mufflers off and clamped on turn out slip on mufflers with no baffles and it sounded just like that. A bad a$$ hot rod sound!
