I called into the workshop were my bike has been sitting for 4 or 5 weeks probably building up more carb trouble than it went in to have cured. Been in to see what was happening several times before but it was always 'next week senor' which makes a change from manana I suppose. The mechanic was actually taking the carbs of as I walked in and the boots were dripping petrol, I thought I had the petcock fixed before it went in.

I think the main problem now is that they have managed to mislay the only key. They had found one that worked the ignition and the tank was off so there must be a way round the lock there but how on earth do I get the cap of to put juice in?

Sounds like a good example of a reason to do your own repairs.

Do you have the key number? A duplicate can be made from the number.

Seems though that getting the problem resolved should be the responsibility of the shop.

First of all, why do you only have one key?
You're never going to miss-place it or drop it?
The key code is on the bottom of the ignition switch. You may be able to see it with a flashlight and a turn of the handlebars to get a peek. Should be dirty so wipe with a cloth or something. Once you get the number you can get a good locksmith to cut you a key.

Had the bike for just over a year now and have done just 3 kilometers on her. She needed a fair bit of repair work doing when she arrived and there were problems getting insurance. I had done all the repairs myself but this last thing had me stumped, which is why she is in a workshop.

Tried to get the only key copied locally but was told it was not possible and a trip to the city would be needed but as I was'nt using the bike I thought I would wait till I was, daft I know. That will certainly be the first thing I do once I find the number or the workshop finds the key. Thanks for the info Nick re the number and the switch.

As for accepting responsibility, this is Spain but who knows they may.

I'd be throttling the living crud out of the pipsqueak if they pulled that on me! Find out who his sister is and start dating her, that'll really tick him off (Sorry Mick, I know your happily married but I'm talking revenge here, ignore me). I've gotten all of my missing key tanks open by "raking" the tumblers with a heavy paperclip and a small screwdriver. Best of luck to you, you poor bugger.

When I got my bike it came with no key (among other things missing)
I found that by taking the ignition switch to the locksmith about 90 miles away he was able to cut one for me.
(He was the only one that had one in my neck of the woods)

The hardest part was finding a smith with the right blank.

It takes an Ilcon X118 key blank

Then the smith has to have a code to cut the key to.

In my case he taught me that he could cut the key by cutting until the dogs quit sticking out.... does that make sense? (dogs are my own term)

He also showed me how he could key all of the tumblers alike if you were to have a key of that blank already cut for another bike.

GOOD LUCK.... I think your gonna need it.

If you need me to see about getting you a blank and mailing it to you just PM me. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks Hvnbnd and you to Nick I'll bear you kind offers in mind. Spent some time at this blokes workshop thursday sorting through boxes of keys but I think it's either fallen out of the ignition or it's in his car. He did remember starting the bike up to run her onto his trailer so he accepts responsibility.
They have the bike stripped down and it appears the head gasket is blown as are the O rings and seals. I think he was saying it was due to petrol flooding the cylinders over a period of time but I could be wrong, the bloke speaks no English and my Spanish is not wonderful. I ordered the parts needed from Bikebandit cost $59.59 plus $45.02 postage and $14.90 tax and duty!!!

Your going to be a while before you can get the bike ready to run again.

I'm thinking why not take this time to locate the keycode and get a replacement key made.

Here's a picture of the bottom of the ignition housing removed from the bike. It's gives you an idea what you're looking for.

    Updating.

Nothing good has happened re the bike, she still sits in the old boy's workshop in pieces awaiting the parts I ordered from BikeBandit a month ago to arrive.

Fed Ex managed to get them to Madrid then to a local depot where some useless incompetent cretin decided that my address was wrong and sent the package back to BikeBandit in the US. I have checked and the delivery address was bang on. Have to say the blokes at BikeBandit have been very helpful and I have been impressed.

The Spanish end of FedEx, quite the reverse. It’s not the first time I have had problems with couriers here and I know of other people in this area who have had similar problems with FedEx and other courier companies.
Hopefully the re-ordered parts will arrive next week and my bike will be fixed up and returned to me. If it wasn’t in bits I’d probably get it home and sort it out myself. The key is still adrift but I have found a lock smith who says he can sort that one out for me.

My computer died almost 4 weeks ago had to replace the motherboard processer one H/D sound and video card so I have been offline for about 3 weeks.

Anyone ever seen the tv series Fawlty Towers? Manuel called round to our house in the guise of a tv engineer last week and almost had me in tears.

Ahh yeah. They used to show Fawlty Towers here on PBS. I sure wish they still did.

There was one episode where Basil was telling Manuel that a bird had flown into and died in some water container on the roof. Manuel had birds confused with pigs and thought that Basil was telling him that a pig had flown up and died on the roof. Funny stuff.
