If your instruments take push-in type bulbs, they should work, but I think your stock bulbs are the turn-in type (not sure) so you may want to check them first and buy the correct based bulbs.

    Re: Will these bulbs work???

Kcoop, that style bulb will not work in your stock cluster, as the '80-1 XJ650 Maxim models used dual-pin metal base bulbs in all of the cluster lights (illumination and warning lights).

Also, be aware that LED's are nowhere near as bright as regular incandescent bulbs, and the single-led bulbs tend to be very low in light output.

Also, the warning light bulbs need to be the same color as the lenses that they illuminate, so for those you'd need one each of a blue, green, red, and amber bulbs.

Of course, for the speedo and tach illumination bulbs, you could use any color bulbs that you want, some people like a nice blue or green glow to their gauges at night.....

Thanks! I wasn't sure and thought these might even be brighter. Thanks Len! I will just go to the hardware store and buy some. They are not burned out YET, just want to change them while I am in there cleaning things up.

I'd have to disagree with Chacal (sorry) but you do not have to have colored bulbs, clear will do just fine if put behind a colored lense. I had them on a previous bike and they worked just fine. Infact they were brighter than the stock bulbs. LEDs come in various qualities, so you will need to do your research before you end up with cheap ones that are not very effective.
Also, I found that using the cheaper ones actually worked better for indicator lights, because the better ones were way too bright for night use and good enough for day time riding. The more expensive ones had a pearcing blindness to them, and were too distracting at night. The brighter ones work good for gauges because you don't actually SEE the bulb.
Some auto stores are starting to carry various sizes of them now for a fair price, so you may want to check the stores first. I know O'Rilley auto parts stores here carry a few different sizes.
I did alot of experimenting with different brands/bulbs to get what I wanted.

Does anyone know how or where to get the little rubber
covers that came with the stock pushins?
I had ordered from a yanaha dealer off the
    net and they came clear.
OEM was green but purple would be way cooler.

PainterD, you're probably exactly right. My experiments with the single-LED bulbs showed horrible results for the big gauge faces, and just barely passable results on the colored lenses. But with so many different bulb mfgs. and bulb types, it's difficult to make any hard-and-fast recommendations.

I used 'Super-Wide Angle Ultra Brite' 5XLED "composite" units with a 194 base for my instrument illumination lights, they are a lot better than the incandescents for that.

They were way too bright for the indicators.

You can get them with the BA9S (metal barrel with two pins) base, too.

I just bought two blue 158 leds from the local parts store for $2.50 a piece. They are VERY bright (they guy showed me a test one). I think they are going to look AWESOME behind my gauges. I will take pic and post when I get it installed.

    Re: Will these bulbs work???

kcoop, the only thing you may want to look out for is a blue light illuminating an orange needle, it'll likely turn purple and be tough to see at a quick glance at night. Though, the gauge in general will look awesome.

In my car, I did my dashboard and ended up using white LED bulbs to illuminate through on the HVAC controls...I had to "richen" the colors on the panels with some theater gels. The white light of the LEDs were so bright, the red for "hot" looked orange, and the blue for "cold" was a pale sky blue.

    Re: Will these bulbs work???

I put Blue Light Bulbs in the Instrument Panel of the 900 and it improved the Night Vision dramatically.

One thing I did NOT appreciate was having the Headlight Bulb blow-out, one night, and the wattage to the cluster increase because the Headlight was out.
It caused the Panel to become so bright I couldn't see where I was going.
