Back together and rolling again!!

    Just got my bike back together after some major cleaning and a few repairs. Replaced the valve cover gasket and donuts, rebuilt the starter, polished a few things, new plugs, cleaned the carbs, new air filter, and best of all new paint!! So here are the first pics I have posted of my bike and to me it's starting to look good. A few other things like new exhaust and bit more spit and polish and things will be looking really good.

    That is very nice looking bike. You make me want to take my pictures of mine off of here. I am ashamed of how mine looks compared to yours. My bike is still a work in progress. Looking sweet there Creamsoda.

    Well lets not forget I'm in the industry lol but here is a good reason why. Directional designs are recognized by the grooves in the tread that swipe away in a backward angle from the center of the tread face and rotate in only one direction. A direction of rotation arrow is located on both sidewalls of the tire. Directional tires enhance straight-line acceleration , provide maximum dry traction , and better wet performance which helps to reduce rolling resistance as well as providing shorter stopping distances.

    Tires Directional Arrows Explained By Avon Tyres

    Before we can talk about directional arrows you must first understand a bit about tread patterns. There are many different tread patterns but there is one main reason to have any tread and that is to disperse water (dust, dirt, etc.).

    A tread pattern can be designed to disperse more water by making it rotate in only one direction. Thus, the need for directional arrows. The arrow tells you which way to mount a tire for maximum water dispersal.

    Another, less apparent reason for directional arrows is the tread splice. What is a tread splice? When a tire is manufactured the tread portion of the tire starts out as a long flat strip. This strip is wrapped around the tire and the two ends are cut on an angle so one end overlaps the other rather than having square cut ends.

    This overlapping point or splice offers a bigger surface area to bond together, rather than the small surface area provided by square cut ends. (Imagine gluing your fingertips together, as opposed to gluing along the entire length of your fingers laid on top of each other. Like an angled splice, the overlapping fingers result in a much stronger bond).

    To further ensure the strength of this bond along the tread splice the directional arrow will show you which way to mount the tire so that when the rider is “on the gas”; the acceleration force on the rear tire is pressing the splice together, rather than peeling it back.

    As for braking, 80 % of the braking should take place in the front on most bikes. Therefore, the front tread splice is run in the opposite direction than that of the rear, so when the rider is on the brakes, he’s not peeling the tread splice back.

    ***************************

    Suffice it to say that you do not want to introduce a condition where an internal tread splice might fail, becuase when they do, it can result in an immediate and catastrophic failure of the entire tire!

    Well thanks for the info guys and I appreciate the concern.... in response I ran out to see which direction the arrows are pointing and according to what I am seeing the arrows are pointing in a clockwise direction. Which according to my understanding of the info you all gave means the tire is actually on correctly.

    Ok I am confused the arrow is pointing in the direct the tire would be rotating if moving forward at least thats what I am seeing. So which way is the arrow suppose to be pointing.

    ok I went and looked again and are we talking about the direction arrow or the actual tread here guys becuase I am confused. to me the arrow says the tire is on correctly but I understand the tread does seem backwards. It would surprise me since the PO didn't know diddly about anything on this bike. All I know is that I have owned th bike since June of 09 and the the tires are about two years old according to the PO which means it has always been on the wrong way.

    Looks like a Metzler ME33? in which case it is fitted correctly, things aren't always as they seem when it come to Tread patterns

    In car tyres they might be, bike tyres like the ME33 and some models of Avon tyres they are the opposite of what you would expect
