    Hello all, Great site here.
What I am doing is a frame up of a 82 xj650rj seca. I was wondering if anybody has seen or used an aftermarket ignition controller (e.g. MSD, Mallory, Accel). So I could get rid of stock ignitor and coils. when I was stripping the bike I found corrosion in one of the ignitor connectors. I popped the top on the ignitor and low-n-behold corrosion on inside. After finding that I checked the coil resistance andis running higher than normal on both primary and secondary. So instead of getting a used ignitor I was going to install a control box. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to you Wookie! Eliminating the ignition box is a tall order but not impossible. Not having touched this topic myself, I'll defer to the experts. Coils can be reconditioned but it is a time intensive proposition requiring special tools. Clean your ignitor unit off with alcohol (technical grade isoprophyl should be fine), swap out the offending coils and you should be back in business.

My opinion is don't waste a lot of money buying and experimenting trying to one-up the Yamaha Engineers.

The stock Igniter provides the bike with all the performance the bike was engineered to have ... particularly -- Advance. Adding more advance beyond what the factory box triggers is going to kick-open the door to a myriad of possible component failures.

(Blown head gaskets being right at the top of a list of far more serious catastrophic failures.)

Replace the coils with High-Performance units? Sure. Many do.
Replace the Fuse Panel with a better designed and more reliable one. Highly recommended!

Replace the Igniter for one the aftermarket maker claims to be better and designed to out-perform the OEM box? Don't bother.

You'll just be getting a box that's just like the one you got ... with some pigtails that beat infringement; and a colorful sticker, with some lightning bolts added to make you think you're going faster.

The Manuals all say that there's NO way of testing for a faulty Igniter and it can't be repaired.

Test it by seeing how another bike runs with it.
Any electronic technician who can spot a fracture in an I-C or a "Cold soldered spot" could fix it while eating lunch.

    Hi too.

If you can afford one [a aftermarket tci] then why not , go for it, if you can't afford one , don't .
