I did a search, but I didn't find what I am looking for... so here I am...

What is the widest tire I can I can get on the front of my '82 XS400J? From all the reading I have been doing, I see that it uses the same wheel as most of the XJ bikes. I am just looking to see if I can get something close to a 110/something-19 on my bike without too much effort. What is the widest tire you guys are running on your bikes?

Thanks for any help I can get...

I just bought a pair of tires for the 650, went with 100/90-19 up front. I'm sure Yamaha tried all the nearby sizes, and chose what they chose for a reason. Not sure how wide you can go, but I've read on here that +/-10 should be fine (130 works on the 120 rear).

if you have a 100 on the front, go measure the gap, and if its more than 5 mm it (read) SHOULD fit, however you may be sacrificing handling and so one. There is a rear conversion kit available so you can put a nice fat tire on the front

I don't think a 110 will fit even with the fender off.

100/90-19 looks a lot better than 90/90-19 but it also depends on the manufacturer and model of tire.

I just took some measurements... It looks like a 110/90-18 will fit in the front forks.. but the fender bolts will either have be replaced with some kind of a counter sunk bolt, or the fender will have to go. The bike has a 130/90-16 on the back right now.. but I am going to try to go to a 130/70-18 for the back..

Are you going to increase the rim size out back along with that tire size?

Yes, I am going to a 130/70-18 out back... it has a 130/90-16 out there right now. I am looking at a pair of wheels from a 78 Honda Hawk. Both bikes have a 15mm axle, and disc front, drum rear... so I am thinking it will be a simple swap.

I did some configuring with gearcommander, and I will need to get a 34 tooth sprocket for the rear, assuming that it is actually a 16t front sprocket, and not the 15t I was told it is by the local parts store...

Gotcha. Well I ran a 130 all last year no problem, so that'll work. I can't imagine a smaller radius would hurt, but I suppose there could still be some clearance issues worth looking into.

I'd like to do the same on mine. I always liked the fat tire - no front fender look myself. I'm not too concerned on the difference in handling.

Umm... timmah don't you have an XS400 with a monoshock?

Have you checked the overall DIAMETER of a 130/70-18? I wouldn't be so worried about width as I would be about it actually FITTING in the swingarm in the first place.

I used a tire calculator to determine overall diameter, and it says that the 130/70-18 is actually smaller... OD on the 16 is 26.213in, and the 18 is 25.165in

Yes fitz, this is the model with the mono shock...
