After stripping the maroon fuel destroyed top coat, I found the tank had been painted at least 3 times before, badly, after sanding, the surface resembled a moonscape. Pic 1.
At this point a descission had to be made, strip back to bare metal & reveal whatever horrors might lurk beneath, (there were 2 dents to the lower front right quarter, that had been filled), or encapsulate what we had with 2 pack primer / filler & try to get a reasonable surface, I opted for the latter.
    Pic 2, with 6 coats of P/F............

I dont know what was worse, sanding off deep rust or using the PO's canvas to work with..

but thats a nice job you did there wiz, what did you use to fill the hole?

the gas cap hole, I used masking tape but the gas fumes pretty much melted the glue and it fell off..

Jeez wizard you don't muck around.

Guys it was a pleasure to meet the man and also catch up with Bushy. The 2 xj900's that wizard has in his garage look great and Bushy took one for a quick spin.

Went with a similar color, medium red pearl, to the original so the tank doesn't look out of place until I can have the rest of the bike painted.

The filled dents on the RHS would confirm my suspicions that it had had a fall on that side at some time in its past.

you do do it right don't you? I wish I had the tools you have access to.

ps, did I mention I hate you? I am of course kidding. You do very nice work! I'm just jealous because I can't work outside yet, it's still to freakin cold and I have too much stuff stored in the old garage

I'm intrigued by the little red push lawnmower that is in a lot of your pictures, Wiz. It seems to have the rare, optional "spiral" wheels. Any plans to restore it, perhaps paint it blue? :D
