Ok first off i really want to thank everyone this forum is great.
I baught a 650 maxim 1980. it sat for 2 years outside in wa weather, but was coverd. but only has 5,000 miles on it
the bike ran when he parked and he said ran great.
1st thing i did was get new battery. new plugs.
2nd remove carbs and gave them a rick cleaning and bench sink.
the carbs were verry varnished but no rust. i also did the cluck test.
all good. jets are 110, and 40. were a little pitted inside but holes are good and open.
3rd cleand petcock- tank was very clean and filter. noticed that bike will only run on prime,i think, i did read post on how to check, is it ok to run on prime just to get her going and ajust everything?
4th reinstalled carbs, had to tap starter (normal when sit now perfact) and she dint want to get spark at first but i cleand connections then desided to replaced with new fuse box (found how to in forum) she fired right up has pleanty on throttel respons high and low but the idle is sparatic and kind of popping a little , i give it gas it goes away. also pulled new plugs not wet but black. tried an extra set of carbs that were off a 82 650 seca they have 120 in them and 40 but bike ran eaven worse and wouldnt idle for crap iam going to thriough back on the others today.
also iam getting shocked through the plug caps when i touch them on #1 plug side, is that normal?

What should i do next? i have extra set of coils do you think its a carb problem or spark or vaulves.

Re: new bike the fun starts

You definitely should NOT be getting shocked through the caps. Might as well change all 4 of em. They're probably cooked from being outside for 2 years, and they're cheap :) good insurance.

Start with that and see how it runs after.

well i thaught so but anyhow got the carbs back on and checked my #4 plug and it wast gaped right so now i got here runing decent enough to tune, iam trying to get the air fule right i can get it close but iam still working on it.

    i tried 21/2 turns but it seams like #1 want 1 1/4 2# 1 1/2 3# wants 21/2
    #wants 1 1/4 does that make sence

Basic rule of thumb is start with all of them 3 turns out and tweak colour from there. i'd say 1 1/4 is way to lean. Check the colour of your plugs, they'll tell the story.

cool ok here is were iam at got all at 2 1/2 and got good idle at 1100
very sleight miss you have to listen for it no backfires and will rev nice.
so i think iam ata good point for fine tune.

I reved up to 4500 for around 20 sec but its not enough my plugs are new so they still look clean. like i can still se the fresh metal.

do you think i should just ride it a little and see what the plugs look like
if white or black or brown and then tweeek in small incroments or do i have to do a color tune.

darn whent back out after bike coold and its popping a little and i had to choke but its li 40 deg out . should i tune when its cold or warmed up
seems like i whent with 2 1/2 when it was warmed up and had a good idle but when i whent back out it wouldnt idle but i think i have to choke it like normal and then see when it warms up and i turn choke off if its got a good idlle? and then tune?

Wiz is saying to make sure your rear brake pads aren't delaminating from the shoes. They can feel fine but could come apart at speed and wreck you.

You should always tune at full operating temp. Unfortunately you can't just rev it up in neutral and get results, you can check the colour from idle after it's warm, but to test say 4k rpm, you have to go out and do what we call a plug chop.

Search for plug chop and you will find how to's. I tend to trust plug colouring over a color-tune.
