    Morning guys :)

Well as some of you might know I was having problems getting my XJ700 MaximX going & now at long last I got it working!! Horray :D

Only problem now is that a week after I got it working I now can't find the bloody keys :( Looked everywhere, but still no joy. Did have a load of bikers round my place after a doo we went to and didn't know a few of them so some light fingered beggar might have lifted the keys, so big lock & chain on it in the garage at the moment just in case!!

My question is, how easy is it to get a replacement key from Yamaha? I have my frame no etc on the bike, but not the original registration no. as originally the bike came from the U.S. & now it's here in the U.K.

The other option I have is to get a 2nd hand ignition lock, steering lock & seat lock with keys. Anyone have a set they want to sell me please???
Also how hard is it going to be to get the ignition & steering lock off? Take it I'll have to snap it off, or is there a way to get it all off without destruction? :)
Also have to remove the seat lock as well if I have to get a different set of keys & barrels.
Any advice would be grateful as no idea which way I should go as never had to do anything like this before. Next time I'll get spare keys cut, so it don't happen again.

Cheers guys, I know someone out there will be able to advise me as the forum seems to have someone who's tackled every conceivable problem with our bikes!

    Regards .... Babylon :)

if its the same as xj750 maxim just 2 bolts hold it in place.the lock is just a round peg that comes out of it so will need no smashing to get it off. just a pita getting to it.

I recently had to repair my ignition lock on my 600 - although this is a UK bike.

I had to unbolt the top yoke and remove it because the lock is secured with tamperproof screws which have to have their heads drilled off. After this, the leftover stud just unscrews.

I know Wemoto do replacement ignition switches/locks for about £25 for my bike but check for yours as the US bike may have extra wiring (For daytime lights).

Not sure about seat locks but you could try Granby motors - they do genuine yamaha spares for older bikes.

Nice to see some Uk guys in here .... Was starting to think I was the only one! LOL ;)

So by Robbo's reckoning would I need to get the security bolts drilled out first like Markie has said I need to do so I can then disengage the steering lock?

Just spoken to my mate's brother who used to work for a Yamaha dealer down here in Weston-super-Mare & he's just confirmed what Markie has said re drilling out the bolts. He also said that if I get the barrel off there are a couple of security places nearby that should be able to make a key from the barrel no. if I take in my V5 & photo ID, so will keep you posted on my progress.
    Cheers guys!

I'm not sure on that bike, but some of the older Yamaha's had a code on the ignition. You just bring that code to the deal, and they would cut you a key. You will probably have to find an older dealer though. Most of the newer ones don't make keys. (They may be able to order one.)

    *** UPDATE ***

Managed to get the barrel out of the ignition! :D

Didn't have to drill any screws out, just had to de-assemble most of the headlight & instrument panel to get to all the screws :)

One bonus ... I now know where the fuses are on the Maxim, behind the panel with all the indicator lights etc ;)

Fingers crossed the place in town will be able to cut me a key, even though the barrel doesn't have a number on the side.

The lock cylinder (barrel) does not have the key code number on it; there is a little sticker with the key code number on it (or, the number may be engraved into) the bottom of the switch unit itself....where you removed the mounting screws from to remove the entire unit from the bike!

I have replaced all three keyed components on my seca and see the sets on ebay very frequently.

I was given the bike from a friend who was storing the bike in his brothers building for a couple years, when the building was sold the bike got moved to his backyard to rot so he gave it to me but by this time the key was lost so I had to replace the components. very easy on my bike, I could have it done in under 20 minutes. I did however have to learn how to pick locks with help from youtube in order to lift the seat and fuel tank cap to get to the mounting screws.

The used set on ebay went for under $40 shipped.

    Hi guys,

Got a new key cut for the bike, but not 100% sure of where the spring goes in the ignition :(
Can someone please tell me or even better, does anyone have an exploded diagram so I can make sure I've got everything in the right order.

Cheers in advance guys ... Rick :)

Funny that I saw this thread today.
Last night, while I was getting ready to start my Midnight, I noticed what appeared to be the plastic key shroud wasn't snapped down all the way as the key switch seemed too low.
Well, when I pushed on the shroud, it was tight. I looked at the key switch and it was loose, nearly to the point of it dropping out. Both bolts were backed almost all of the way out.
Now I keep my bikes in very good condition and would have noticed the day or two before when I had ridden it if the switch had been loose.
I guess, that when I rode it to church, it could have been possible for someone to try to remove the two bolts and take the switch out.
Maybe it was about to get "jacked" and for some reason the perpetrator was run off.
Sounds accusing, I know, but that's all the explanation I got for the quickly and substantially loosened switch bolts.
I don't take chances with my rides being harrassed, but guess I need to take more precautions.
    Waa! Waa! Waa!

There are actually many springs in the ignition switch......2 per tumbler, some more for the little "door" that closes to keep the dust out, and then more down in the "contacts" area. No exploded diagrams that we know of..........

    Evening Chacal :)

The spring I'm on about is the one about 10mm dia x 10mm long that fits down the shaft somewhere in the ignition. Problem is I can't remember where in amongst all the bits it actually goes! LOL :D
Any help would be gratefully received, cos I'm itching to get back on 2 wheels bro :)

    Cheers .... Babylon ;)

Yes, there is the key code on the ignition...either write it down or pull the ignition and go to a good locksmith. I've had a few bikes sans keys and it costs me 18 bucks (US) and 15 mins of my time and I have a new set.

I think you are talking about the spring that holds the contact points down onto the wiring chassis. After you put the barrel back in (from the top), the spring goes in (from underneath), then the plastic contact carrier (probably white??), then the wiring contact chassis, then the cover.

    Morning Hillsy,

When the barrel is inserted (from the top), then there is the shaft, then a plate that has 2 small screws, then a plate with raised bits that the contact carrier sits on, then the wiring contact.

So does the spring go in between the screwed down plate, with the plate with the raised bit sitting over that (as the central hole looks large enough for the spring to fit down), then the plastic contact carrier (shown with the copper contacts in the pics below) on top of that?

Here's 2 pics that I took before completely taking it apart ... Thank goodness or I'd still be scratching my head copletely still now!

    Hi all,

Just thought I would add a lettle update to anyone this might help :)

Finished putting the ignition back together & got it all back on the bike working yesterday.

The spring I was asking about goes in BEFORE the screwed down brass coloured plate under the plate with the raised bits (as seen in the photos above).

Also gave all 3 of my locks a good amount of GT85 and worked the new keys & now both work all the locks ... Happy days!

Hope this info might help someone else!

    Regards .... Babylon 8)
