Ok guys...I have an 81 Maxim 550 that sat for 25 years in a guys basement till I got hold of it last year. I got it with 7000 miles on it, and after cleaning it up, doing the carbs, new clutch, pro auto body repaint on tank and side covers (covers have all the tabs) and no body work on tank, and a lot of scrubbing, I put 3000 miles on it commuting last season. It has no dents, rust, scratches, perfect seat, everything works, starts every time and runs like it should. It has original tools and original fusebox that is like new with no problems. I added a plexifairing for the 50 mile a day commute.
I have $2000 in this bike and consider it worth at least that, but after a run on craigslist, all I got was a bunch of crap about it being worth $800 according to KBB and spam. So....I know there is a lot of knowledge here. Am I smoking crack like they told me on cragslist to ask $2500 with the intention of taking 2k? The thing is showroom and I have seen junk selling for $1500-1700. Classic bikes rarely sell for KBB prices as near as I can tell. I wouldn't be afraid to take this thing cross country. What's it worth guys???? My new FZ1 has just been sitting since I got this puppy and the GF is ticked. She says one or the other has to go and I can't sell the FZ. Any pricing info appreciated.

Like anything else my friend something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay.

And with the economy as it is good luck with that.

Most of us here have lovingly restored these bikes at a cost way beyond what they are worth or ever will be and to bring these bikes back to life in hopes of making a profit is not realistic.

    $2500 for a 30 y/0 550 ? I bough my 01 800 Vulcan for just over 3k and personally most will buy a newer bike.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck
    Rob

Its a really good time to sell your bike right now, it is probably worth around 2000, though if you have 2000 and see that theres a 1983 maxim 550 or a 1995 katana 600 going to the same price what will most people buy? these bikes are worth more to keep than sell

soo.... go tell your girlfriend to make you a sandwich.
