Is it possible to change the fuel jets without pulling the carbs?

No, pulling carbs would be the only way due to the generator placment

It would be possible, though I would personally prefer to take the carbs off to do it. With a shorty screw driver you can get the bowls off and the jets swapped. The few times I've done this on side jobs I've always regretted just sucking it up/sweating it out and taking the carbs off altogether... Try it and see what you think.

May I ask why you're having trouble with the intake boots? You should be able to loosen the boot clamps, slide each boot back into the air box and pull the carbs off. The more you do it the quicker you get!

Getting them off is the easy bit, getting them back on is harder.

Try hitting the boots with a heat gun to re-install. That softens them right up and with a bit of practice you will have them on in no time.

I had them off and on 5 times last summer...

    I know what's involved and i don't like it...

when my jets get here I'm going to try putting them in without taking the carbs out i'm sure it can be done...

::::::::: greetings mr phelps :::: an xj owner expects to install main fuel jets without removing the carbs :::: your mission is to gather a video of this ill advised attempt :::: place a camera nearby so that we can all watch this go down :::: if you are able to include an audio track accompanying the video :::: particularly when he gets frustrated and starts cursing his beloved mother for ever giving him life :::: we can submit the tape to americas funniest home videos and win ten grand :::: this won't self distruct :::: you never read it :::: i never typed it :::: we were never here :::: this never happened :::: just like replacing jets with carbs on bike :::::::::::

Scholz...if your boots are soft enough you can roll them back on themselves, like some other rubber goods you may be familiar with..no need to push them into th airbox..worked for me.

my experience is that it is best to remove #1 and #4 completely and to push #2 and #3 back into the air box. going back on, #2 fights me a little bit and #3 is always a royal pain - i think it's cuz i'm right handed if you follow that logic. a little squirt of WD-40 helps. the outers always go back on pretty easy. i timed my self last time and it took almost exactly an hour with a smoke break after each boot.

The way I do mine is to get water to ~140 degree F and let them soak. Pull one at a time and wipe them down before install. Works like a charm for me. I can pull and replace in less than 40 mins TOTAL!!
