I got the little mini speedo which was supposed to be 2200/60. Maybe the xjs don't use the same wheel rpms as other japanese bikes. Don't know. I do know I am either going 60 miles per hour in regular 55 zones or ALL traffic has decided to go 80 since I got the bike back.
Anyway, just wondering where you got the speedometer. Or ifnybody has a good source for speedos which work a little better for our motorized cycle units? :p

    Chuckles,
My spedometer is off of an older CB350 Honda, which is the same ratio as our XJs are.
Now you are asking about the tach? The tach is a different ball game. Mine was electric and I would'vehad to replace it with an electric one (but chose to run without one)
Yours must be mechanical and I don't know the ratio it is, so I don't know where you can get one. The tach runs off the engine with a cable so the only thing I would do is look on Ebay or Craigslist and try to find one from a Yamaha that may work. Wish you luck!

Oops, Painter. I don't have a clue why I said Tach. Haha. I meant speedo. Ya I don't use the tach either. I have everything I need to throw a tach on there for synching purposes but run without it.
So the Honda cb. We actually have a couple of those. I may go with that then. For now I have just used marker paint to designate 25, 35, 45, and 60 on the speedo. Its all i need for now. But I think i will make a project out of a honda speedo. Thanks, bud.

They are pretty small. I've got them on my '82 750 Maxim. I much prefer the look of them over the ginormous Atari box. The tach is a little smaller than the speedo. I wouldn't have minded if they were equal size.

Are they a direct swap to a 550 then? i was thinking about getting a speedo and tach from mikes xs. if they are a direct swap onto my 550 i'm going to get them. after rebuilding my stock setup the speedo says im going anywhere from 10-15 mph faster than what i'm actually doing. its actually kind of funny to look at the speedo saying 25 when im putting down my driveway.

I found the Honda speedometer is more accurate then the stock Seca speedometer. They are a direct swap except for the bracket I made to hold it on the tripple tree. The Yamaha cable screws right in to the back of it.

Excellent. I am going to just do that then. I think I'll make the bracket too so that it's centered. I really am not cpying you scheme with your xj. Just turned out that way... black and red. I have decided, I am pretty sure, that I am going to go without side covers all together. I am either going to leave everything like it is or make a box. Going to eventually go with all red cables and lines too.
