I have a small rust hole in the right muffler of my bone stock Seca 650. I am not after greater performance, different sound, etc-- I just want something serviceable. From searching through previous forum posts, it seems that a number of people have used original equipment Sportster mufflers. Will these fit without modification? If not, are there any other recommendations?

Oh-- I did get a new back tire-- and have had a couple of rides this month (pretty good for MN)

    Thanks for your thoughts,

    Rob Kopp

    rmkopp,
How's it going? I missed you last year. Hopefully I'll get down there this summer and do some riding with you. I missed so many rides last year because of family gatherings and rain, so I decided this year is going to be different. No family stuff will over ride my riding plans, so now I just hope the weather holds out!!
I have Harley mufflers on mine and I like them over everyting else I've tried. There wasn't any mods to be made other than the strap that holds them to the frame in the back ( had to fabricate some out of polished aluminum)
    Here's mine:

    Hey PainterD,

Looks like just a strap to retrofit-- cool. Yes, it would be great to have a group ride this year-- I never made it last year, either-- mainly uncooperative weather when I could have made it.

Just another snow or two and it will be Spring.

Sounds good Streetbrawler. I'll keep you in mind and we'll have to post a ride for the next weekend when the weather is favorable. I assume the bikes are out in full force down your way with the nice days we've had lately. I just got back from riding (51* here now) and it felt good after being at meetings all day.
I'll get a list of all the riders (alot from last year) so we can all meet and ride this season.

Ya they have been out in force, only harley sounds around here, except me. My first ride on the bike ever, was Sun. just out of town and back, no headlights, liscense or insurance, it was a short shake down run. Need to get my pilot jets figured out for the pods, am going to try a pvc intake I think, but the stocker is ready....almost! Never enough time to get it done it seems, I am ready to ride though, winter was long!

Koop: Not totally a straight fit; does take some fooling around with. Also they can be expensive and they're HEAVY!!! as in weight

You can either try out your local shop, some will give them away since they have so many, or ebay is a reliable source. It might take you a couple weeks, but they aren't expensive. I paid less than $40 for both of mine shipped.

I welded mine on to the existing pipes. I also cut off, and re-attached the mounting hardware and kick stand bumpers.

if the holes aren't in a noticable location you can have them fixed. I have the mufflers on my bike patched with stainless. you can't see them unless you duck under the bike.

I may have mentioned this before - if you want to paint your mufflers, you can fix holes or rusted out ones with fiberglass. The fiberglass gets stronger the hotter it gets. I had an old Honda CB550 that had rusted out mufflers on it. I didn't want to spend any money on it (didn't have much back then) and I found this out from a guy at work.
So I wrapped the mufflers (just in the back half of them) with fiberglass fiber cloth and mixed up some resin and layered it on in a couple coats. When it set (I believe the same day) I took it out and got those mufflers as hot as possible. The next day, I removed them, sanded them smooth and painted them with engine enamel. I rode it like that till I sold it a couple years later. It held up well too. It's just an option for the thrifty.

    Re: Muffler alternatives:

    Take a look here: http://www.emgo.com/main_layout.html

Look under mufflers, and look at the Dunstall replicas (under "Norton") and the "Roadhawk" line. There are a few alternatives that quite closely resemble your stock mufflers. Unfortunately, EMGO doesn't sell direct, but their stuff is widely available.

There is also a company called Jama that makes aftermarket replacement exhausts, "Jama Originals" sold in the US by Laser Exhaust: http://www.laserexhausts.com/Bikes/Prod ... inals.aspx
One of theirs is specifically meant for the XJ550 and XJ650.

The main reason I switched to the Harley mufflers (other than they look great) is because they are almost as quiet as stock mufflers (have a radio on my scoot) The Emgos were loud, but not real annoying as other after market mufflers. I also had the MAC 4-into-1 system on when I got the bike and it was also kinda loud. It's bad enough these bikes scream at higher rpms, but with after market mufflers on, sometimes it's just plain annoying, especially if you like to sneak out early in the morning (or late at night!) Emgo mufflers are pretty good quality if you go that route and reasonably priced.

    HI Guys,

Bought HD Sportie pipes for $40 incl frt on ebay - was going for looks at first...but removing the old ones revealed this was of necessity...

They are drilled so I can't wait to find out I need to re-jet...so I can donate more to Chacal's fund...

I will wait as I've already found out I need new needle seat float thingies - man those things are expensive - espec after just buying new intake boots from him.

I don't speak welding so the guy that works on it is grinding the mounting flange off the HD pipes, removing the flange from the stock pipes and re-welding them to the HD pipes. It seems to measure up. Will know tomorrow. But with the new gaskets I will be acquiring.. these guys will go right on.

Forward controls from ebay next - done.

    Regards,

    PY

    Greetings,

NO carb rejetting required...but as previously noted they were cleaned out, adjusted and new needle & seats installed...

The pipes went on like a factory glove, sound and look awesome. Deeper tone.. not so tough on the ears.

Passing on fwd controls...saw a msg in here on front pegs I'm going to go with. Cutting my current pegs, using 1" bar and attaching to the engine mounts.

I need to take a pic or 2 and post 'em...

    TC- Peace...
