Dyna coils performance on Maxim X?

    Is there any performance advantage by installing Dyna coils and wires on my 85 Maxim X? I know the stock coil cases crack and let moisture in and Dyna coils a bugger to fit them under the tank.I just would like to know if anyone has done it and noticed a differance on there bike. My bike has 5400 miles and the coil cases have hair line cracks starting,but runs fine.I have brand new Dyna Green coils and Dyna wires,not sure I want to go throught the trouble of putting them on and gain notthig out of it.

    Here's a link with a step-by-step on how to mount them. As I understand it, the Dyna coils are one of the few things that we can do to our Xs that results in a significant performance improvement. It is next on my list of mods.

    I have one with the stock coils and one with dyna coils.

    BAR NONE, my bike with the stocks will SMOKE the dynas any time any where.

    That being said, I think the bike with dynas has a significant compression issue which is why I'm putting together one of my spare engines from the ground up. Actually, I kind of doubt it would run as well as it does if it had the stock coils.

    IF you have good stock coils there is very little if any performance improvement. Trouble is there are very few good stock coils in existance :(
    The dynas do seem to improve starting and the off-idle stumble of a slightly out of tune or worn engine.

    Personally I don't like the way HAP shows the conversion. I don't like any parts to just "hang there" unsecured. I've done three or four now (replacing severely cracked coils). I prefer to use the stock mounting bracket and make a couple flat hangers and spacers to bolt them on and use straight connectors out of the coils for the plugs. Unfortunately I don't have any pics handy.
    One thing to pay attention to if you do the conversion is that the dyna pulse connections are very close to the mounting holes and it is easy to create a short while mounting them.

    Well, there you go. You learn something new everyday!! I guess I'll keep my extra set of stock coils around just incase.

    That was certainly the case with my 750J, considering one of the secondary windings had major problems.

    IIRC, Chacal said he'd managed to come up with a mounting kit for the X. Fortunately or not (depending one one's viewpoint) I don't need to replace my coils on my X yet, so no pictures from over here, either.

    I actually followed RickOmatic's (I think it was him) wire replacement procedure. Then seal the entire coil with epoxy and plasti dip. No more rain or moisture prone coils for me.

    HAP is the initials of the guy up in Canada that is a big max-X fan and runs the maxim-x site that Josh linked to.

    His site is a great resource for X owners

    He has done a bunch of tinkering and detailing his bike and is a die hard Dyna coil supporter along with irradium plugs.
    There is so much data out there documenting the tiny performance improvements from the irradium plugs that I don't feel the cost is even remotely justified.
    I would much rather buy disposable plugs and toss a couple sets getting everything tuned out perfect than spend $60 on a set of plugs but that's just me.

    The coils are a definate improvement if you have any cracks or corroded wires but if you take a well tuned bike with good stock coils and swap to dynas you would need some precision equipment to measure the improvements IMO

    The spark plug caps are actually a bigger problem on many bikes and he used to have a good write up on rebuilding them.

    I'm seeing a pattern here -
    The ones who claim an improvement when switcing to Dyna coils, are doing it because of poor coils or bad wires to start with. Of course new coils are gong to be an improvement, but over stock coils isn't a fair comparison if the old setup was bad. I'd like to see the comparison going from a good setup with stock coils tothe Dyna coils and see if they are truly a better swap. Just sayin'.
