i just picked up a 1981 yamaha xj 650. the only problem i have run into, is starting this old girl. if i want to ride this baby i need to get this fixed and before the weather gets any nicer !

in detail - it is tough to start when the engine is cold.. but once the engine is warm it fires no problem. i have had the carbs tuned, synced, and cleaned but still find myself running into this problem.

if anyone can lead me in the right direction as to where to start i would love the input!! i am a competent mechanic and have access to a variety of tools. :)

many people clean the carbs but over look the small oriface in the float bowl that is the part of the enrichment circut that usually gets plugged and bam starter fluid needed to start
make sure you have a good battery weak battery weak spark hard start
that should do for now try searching for hard start in the forums also
    good luck,
    James

Might check the battery it's a good starting point. I was having problems like this last year when the mornings were in the 50's. the bike was turning over but not starting the battery tested weak replaced it and cold starts were no longer a problem. Hope it is that simple for ya
