I know this sounds crazy and it still amazes me but here's what happened: I left my helmet on the seat of my bike with the visor open for three days in my garage. The garage door is open during the day since I work out of an office that's inside it and the weather's been nice. Yesterday I grabbed my helmet to put it on and what the...?? There was an almost completely built bird nest in it! Built in just three days - in my friggin' helmet!

I wish I'd taken a picture of it for proof but my wife and granddaughter saw it so I have witnesses.

Moral: always keep your helmet on a flat surface with the visor CLOSED. That way the birds will look for a better spot.

I left my shop door open last weekend all day and yesterday when I went to use the sandblaster I found the beginnings of a nest in the gloves.

They'll take over anyplace that looks safe

I left my XT in the shed for a winter and then couldn't start it when spring came. Opened the air box and found a complete mouse nest. I guess good for extra air filtration.

I work as an electrician and a few years ago was called to a grain dryer because the ELCB (Ground fault circiut interruptor in the US) kept tripping out.

I narrowed it down to the 50kw motor. When I removed the terminal cover, there lay a very charred mouse across the 415v terminal posts!!

    It wasn't alive anymore.

Same thing happened to me,except I only leave the door open for a few hours/day.

On a similar note,I always check inside my helmet for wasps/bees/etc before I put it on each time.Last year my brother put his helmet on and ended up with stings covering his face/neck.It's one of those things that's funny when it's happening to someone else :p

There is a real good reason to get and use a trunk. Never had the infestation issue, never dropped the helmet. Even fits in saddle bags. I know some guys don't like the look, but these pieces are ever so handy. Also keeps wise cracks about "bird brains" to a minimum (unless my wife is trash talkin').

I've learned from experience to shut my doors when not in the shop. Birds like to crap on all your stuff if you don't (and build nests) The only time I leave the big door open is whenI'm working in there.
