I am new to this forum and I have an 82 xj1100 maxim that I love deeply and I am changing out the intake boots have all the parts, its apart and going back together but should the gaskets be RTVed or dry.

Iwould like to thank you all for being here to help and the welth of info on this site. I had the bike for 5 years and think it is worth the time to keep it running the best I can and with some help and info from all of you I just mite. So I mite ask some dumb questions but I rather be an ass than do bad thinks to "Black Maria" she has never let me down.

    Thanks again
    bob

    Hi vegabob,
I like to use permatex brand anarobic sealer. I just wipe a very small amount on both sides of gasket "dressing" the gasket if you will. There should be no sealer squishing out if there is you used to much. The stuff is transparent red in a blue tube and will not harden unless its under presure.
what ever you do if you use sealer make sure it's rated to a high enough temp.

My intake boot had cracks in them. I didn't exactly know if they leaked or not, but I coated them anyway. I used GOOP (this tuff is amazing - even says it on the package) I sealed all the cracks with it,let it set for a day and painted it with high temp paint. Never had a problem since. It dries like hard tire rubber so it still has a bit of "give" to it. Give it a try.

I knew what you were talking about bob  the important thing to do on those is to antisieze the bolts!!!! if your boots are cracked bad a little rtv silicone coating will seal up the cracks. and like I said just dress the gasket
welcome to the sight and good luck,
    James

I use the spray can of RTV Copper to dress most gaskets. It sprays on like paint, so you don't have to worry about getting it too thick.
