    Hi all

My tach[speedo] instrument needle has begun to wobble all the time, I have checked for air leaks at the carbs so it can't be that, i have even shot some spray up the housing area too, but makes no difference, the instument panel was second hand when I bought it, so where to next...I am speaking to Chacal.

    Any advice?

Clean, lube, inspect the cable; the instrument itself may need to be serviced.

It can be done, but on a bike with "canned" instruments (as opposed to being in a cluster) you will need to slice open the inner plastic "cans" to gain full access.

    Here's what's going on inside: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15303.html

Opening the cans on the XJ650RJ (and all the XJ700 models) is a whole 'nother game.........the cans are "sealed" and don't come apart to allow access to the guts........brilliant factory engineering.

Can't remember where I saw it, but on the 650 Seca gauges, the only way to gain access to the internals is to use a dremel to cut the plastic cases open all the way around their circumference, and then stand on your head while juggling BB's with your toes, and perform all of sorts of other esoteric task in order to gain access to their inner workings. Then, assuming you made an alignment notch in the cases before your did the "Amazing Randy" act (sawing a woman in half, etc......), you superglue the cases back together, and you're done.

XJ700 instruments are even more fun; somehow, you have to peel off the outer chrome face bezel, all the way around, and then hammer it back in place to re-seal the gauge. Now it will look absolutely awful, what with the dented, contorted formerly-shiny bezel peering out at you like a Samoan evil-eye, but hey, sacrifices must be made. And don't forget that you'll hack your fingers to shreds attempting this procedure. There Will Be Blood...........

A quick squirt with spray up the tach shaft and seemed to do the trick...will keep people posted.
