Hey! New here from Ontario Canada.
I'm new to this forum. My son just bought his first bike as he is turning 16 in June and he's itching to get riding. He got a 1981 Maxim 650 and it needs some TLC to get it ready. Besides the usual....oil change, tune up, tires, brakes, etc. It also has some electrical problems, dented gas tank, no key for the gas cap, and a few other minor issues. No owners manual to help along either. Hoping to get some good info from this forum to help him out.
I'm not used to this type of forum as I normally use Delphi forums, but I'm a quick study so that shouldn't be a problem! lol.

    Cheers!
    Crockett

WELCOME! Definitely (1st thing) get an aftermarket manual. Lots of Canadian members. Most of those issues you spoke of have been addressed here at one time or another...

Thank you! I will try to find a manual and then once I figure this forum out, I will search through and see what I can find to help him out. He's already out there tinkering with it and cleaning it up some. I guess my first issue is to find some keys. My key from my '03 Roadstar will actually fit the ignition (I guess the tumblers are pretty worn), however it won't fit anything else and he still needs to get into the gas tank. (no key for that either)

    Cheers!

crockett464 my son turns 16 in July. We got him a Nighthawk 450 ...it was a basket case. Got it all fixed up and is now ready to ride. Been taking him to large empty parking lots to practice. He wont be allowed on the street untill he takes the MSC. Good luck and safe riding with your bike.

Thanx for the heads up! Same thing, Kyle won't be riding it legal until he takes the course, and as soon as we get the key/s issue done, I will take him down to a local parking are to help him out. I could take him now, but there's only so much gas in that tank that we can't get into! LOL!

    Cheers!

Welcome aboard crockett464, there's quite a few XJs down here in SW Ontario (myself included). Good luck with the repairs and enjoy the Maxim, nice choice ;)

Thank you! Just Crockett is cool. Thanx!
Where about's are you? I remember back "in the day" when these bikes were "big bikes" They were quick! And this one still is! Lot's of motor and not much weight. (personal experience on one of these in .83 as a cager turning left in front of us...almost lost my foot, and my first over the roof flight experience. Passed flying...failed landing! It hurt. LOL!
This is a good starting point for him, and he'll be fine. Looking to find good info on this particular bike, and contacts to help him out with parts (new and used), as well some good tips on maintenance! Looks like a good place to be!

    Cheers!

I'm just a 25 minute drive away (Kitchener). I agree that those XJs are still quick, but what they may lack in quickness they make for in style lol.
