Well, after a long hard New England winter, I've finally gotten my SECA back to running condition.

I inherited this thing from a buddy, who didn't do anything to it, save add gas a few times. Last year it was not running great. I had to idle at 2000 to keep it going, plus it would randomly race all over the place.

So, after the carb cleaning / rebuild (thanks to all who wrote this stuff up), plus a few parts from Chacal, I got her back together. Last night I synched / colortuned / rinse / repeat a few times and took it out for a 30°F test ride. Besides the chilly chilly air, the bike ran wicked awesome! Idles at 1050 now, just like she's supposed to. Throttle response is improved, and for reason, now I have engine braking (previously, letting go of the throttle would slowly reduce the RPMs)

Thanks to all of the information and help from XJbikes! Next up is the fork rebuild and front brake system, and, if I win the auction or score anything at the Stafford Springs Swap Meet tomorrow, maybe a set of Sportster pipes!

Congrats! Don't forget to check for rear brake delamination too. I just got mine on the road on thursday (I took the day off because the weather was so much better) after working on it for over a year, so I know how you feel.

Please check your rear brake shoes for delamination.

The lack of engine braking before the tuneup was because the throttles weren't all closing together.

You don't mention how many miles are on the bike. It needed a valve adjustment at 3000 miles and every 5000 since. Don't overlook it because it seems to run fine.

The first or second thing I did last year was check the rear brakes for the delamination, so as of a few hundred miles ago, they were okay.

I did also adjust the valve clearances prior to putting her back together and tuning up. The worst part of the job was the hour and half it took to get the old valve cover gasket off!

De lamination is when the break material separates from the metal. Sort of like when laminated plywood separates after it gets wet. The problem with this it allows for a large chunk of pad to break loose (at any speed) and lock the break up. Rear tire skid is scary a any speed, but deadly on the highway.
