Hello all. I've finished reassembling my '81 XJ 650. I had pulled the cylinder head, drilled out the broken exhaust studs, helicoiled, pulled the valves, cleaned the bejeebers out of everything. Put the valves back in, got the dots all aligned (basically, I followed the haynes manual), and she wont start. I've got spark, gas to the carbs, and can feel air moving through the heads when I run the starter. I've disassembed and reassembled the cams three times to make sure I got the timing right. Nothing. Just turns over...and over...and over. Help me XJ Forums...you're my only hope...

New plugs work wonders (they never let me down)

Just because you have spark, doesn't mean the you have enough voltage, try a jump start. Check fuses and the condition of the fuse box

Try using some starter fluid (sparingly) to see if it will start with that.

Make sure you have the correct wires going to each cylinder.

Am doing a jump start. Tried starter fluid, nothing, and labeled the spark plug wires so I wouldn't get them mixed up. She's not even firing, just turning.

How about we start with the basics?

First, do a compression test to double-check your reassembly.

Carbs: Float levels? Bench sync'ed? Airbox boots back on, or are you running pods?

Float levels checked out. Hadn't put the airbox boots back on yet, but I'll do that before my next attempt to see if it'll help. Will also do a compression check. Off to autozone to rent a tool...Thanks Fitz!

Okay, got the compression gauge. I may have found my problem. I'm reading zip, zero, zilch on all four cylinders. Not sure what I've done wrong, but I know I did something bad...
