I picked up a 1982 xj 550 for $700 and have been having no luck finding stuff for it. I was wondering what mufflers i can put on it. I want to make it louder but have not been able to find a muffler at all. Any ideas? Also the chain and chain guard seem really close to the rear tire how far apart is it on some of yours? Thanks

I got mine with a 4 into 1 already on it. some salt water, time and a long rod got my baffels out. Just remeber you have to change your jets and carb shims when adding airflow. Guy didn't do it on mine and im still working on it year after year.

If you want it really loud you can go straight. I have the Mac 4 into 1 which sounds tastefully loud. But I also had a straight pipe made to replace the muffler on the 4 into 1 headers in case I ever want to bob it out. The Mac is the most popular for these bikes. Check out Bikebandit, ebay, JCWhitney, etc.

You can go with sportster mufflers, I went with some 50 dollar aftermarkets that look stock.

On my 82 550XJ, the chain guard only clears the rear tire by maybe a half inch. Never had an issue with it rubbing on the tire

wheel might not be aligned properly or the tire is bigger than stock. i just took mine off because it actually was rubbing.

Hey, similar question from me too. I've just acquired a 1982 XJ 550 Seca and am also needing new exhaust. Seems like this guy's is 4 into 1, mine is 4 into 2. So do those sportster mufflers fit for the 82 550 seca 4 into 2?

    Thanks.
