First post - thought I ought to introduce myself if I'm going to be sucking knowledge out of the collective brain here.

I'm a professor of automotive engineering, spent about 25 years working in the auto industry doing everything from twisting wrenches to building the parts I used to install to working with suppliers to help them build the parts. Fun career!

I like bikes. In the garage right now I have a KZ1100 that I'm making into a 2F1R trike, pieces of a 1981 XV750 Virago that I need to put on eBay, a XS1100 waiting to be reassembled, a 1982 XV750 (my regular ride), a 1981 XV920 (needs carbs cleaned and tank sealed), a CX500 (how'd that get in there?) and I just added a 1985 XJ700X last week.

The guy I got the Maxim from had a domestic incentive to get rid of it (yes, dear!!) He'd had it for years and loved it. Couple of years back he had a full top end rebuild done. 500 miles down the road he said he smelled gas and it quit running, so he parked it. Hasn't been started since. He was a motivated seller - when the dust cleared, I had it in the trailer and the title in my pocket for $100-.

The bike itself is in great shape. Okay, so it needs the seats redone. The stuff that drained out of the carbs doesn't smell anything like gasoline, but the tank is clean and the carbs are sitting on the floor waiting for me and a can of carb cleaner. The engine cranks nicely when I have the battery on the charger. Seems to have good compression, and each cylinder sucks nicely through the intakes.

No spark, though. PO says one minute it was purring down the road, the next he was coasting. I have a troubleshooting flowchart for a XJ700N that I'm going to step through when I get the chance. I want to get some noise out of the pipes before I start putting too much into it, but the more I dig into it, the more I like it. I don't think I got hurt on the deal.

Other things to look at include going through the regular things you do when you wake up an old bike - grease the splines, check & bleed the brakes, inspect tires, etc. etc. etc.. Can someone point me to the order form for the XJCD?

I'm looking forward to taking part in this forum and getting to know you better.
