Does it shut down like you hit the kill switch or does it drop from idle to stop? Does it happen in a certain RPM range? What other circumstances are there surrounding the bike? When did you get it, what year, what type, when did it last work? Explain your warm up procedures....?????????

I've had 2 81 650s do this to me in the last 2 years. Starts up and runs fine. 10 to 15 min later it just shuts down like you hit the kill switch. Cycle the ign switch on and off and she starts right back upand runs good for the rest of the day. Both bikes did not do it all the time it was very intermittent. We trouble shoot every thing from replacing the ignition switch to the kill switch, cleaned all the connections every thing you can think of. In the end it turned out to be the TCI. First bike did this act for almost a year before we decided just for grins to replace it. After replacing it it has not pulled that little trick again. The second bike started to exhibit the same thing so I got another TCI from Ebay and replaced it. No problems for about 6 months now. Also we replaced the stock 81 TCIs with units off of later models. IE black decal to red decals, the only difference is that the TCI has the extra pin in the connector to run the electric tack.

If it dies suddenly like you hit the kill switch it's likely electrical.

If it bucks and kicks and eventually quits you probably have a fuel flow problem. Plugged fuel tank vents are notorious for this. Easy to diagnose - when it quits pop the lid, if it goes woosh you've found the problem.

Sorry to thread jack but I'm having a similar issue right now that I'm trying to track down. Right before it dies I can hear a change in the exhaust almost like it;s bogging down or a spark plug is not firing (running on something other than all 4 cyl) then iif I pull the clutch in it just dies like I hit the kill switch. I can crank and crank with no fire, but I smell fuel. I pulled all four plugs and they are dark. I have not had a chance to test spark at each plug wire....hoping to get to that first thing in the morning. I'm leaning towards the TCI, but just for laughs, any other ideas ?

also sounds like tci to me . but there is no real way to test it guess it could be starving for fuel i doubt it tho no reason it would run fine the rest of the day
