Hi here is the next problem I have. The number 1 cyl. is not getting hot. By that I mean I just wraped the header and painted the flanges and the only one that didnt burn off was Cyl 1. When I changed the plugs last week all looked good but #1 it was kind of blackish not oily just sooty? is that the right term.
    Any ideas thanks.

According to the description Cyl no. 1 is running rich and since you say it was black last week chances of the plug being fouled is very likely, you could clean it up and see if the plug starts firing but before that you need to lean out that Cylinder for a proper air+fuel mixture. you can screw in the pilot screw very slightly to lean the cylinder out, what you're aiming for is a tan color on the plug.

Can someone show me a picture of it on the bike? I am not sure where it is located.

Edit: Sorry, seems the 900 has the pilot mixture screw on a different location than I had initially thought.

Wait for someone with a XJ900 come help you locate it.

Before you start messing with the carb mixtures, try swapping plug leads 1 and 4 and see if the problem moves to #4 cyl. If it does, it's the plug cap or lead.

Eliminate this possibility first before changing things that may not be wrong.

Well I found it and leaned it out a little at a time. The plug is now starting to turn a nice tan and the bike is running better. Think you nailed it with that one. think another .25 of a turn and it will be right there.

This bible you speak of is it a yamaha service man?

    Congrats!

The XJ CD is a little different than any official maqnual out there, has tonnes of info in it, apparently a must read to have for any XJ owner, I'm sure you'll find links to order it once you search it up here.
