I need to get new keys cut for the whole lock set ( ignition, helmet/seat lock, chain lock, and gas cap.) I know the gas cap key is separate from the the others, but my question is......Does the ignition key operate the other locks? (seat/helmet, and chain lock) I have removed the helmet lock and taken it to a locksmith but I want to make sure it's the same one as the ignition. I don't want to take the ignition one in because the tumblers are so worn that he won't be able to make an accurate cut to be sure that it fits everything. Except the gas cap obviously.....that's a whole new problem.
Sorry if that whole question is going around in circles!!! LOL!!

my 81 650 has only one key for the cap, seat lock and ignition. Why would the tank have a different one? unless someone changed the cap at some point.

Yeah, someone must have changed your gas cap. Both of my bikes are keyed the same for all locks.

Thanx! I'm not sure what is up with it? My son bought the bike and there were no keys. (actually there was one a couple months ago and it would only open the gas cap.) We tried all the other locations. The previous owner even lost that key too, so that's where we are now. I had a Honda Nighthawk a long time ago and it had a separate gas key so that's why I was wondering that. I have no prior history on this bike, as it was a friend, that passed away.
Hopefully, then...once the locksmith cuts this key it will work on everything??

    Cheers!

The same key works on all the locks. assuming no one has swapped anything out. There were 5 different key blanks used. The one blank should fit in all the locks if they are the same. If you pull the Ignition out and take that to a locksmith; some have the key codes written on the inside(not all) of the Ignition key switch. I had to do this for my bike. The locksmith was also able to make a key for my helmet lock as that came from a different bike. If the key blank is the same the locksmith can rekey the lock so they all work on the same key. I think Charcal has a set of the five key blanks you could find out which ones fit that way (try each on in each lock). Then have the key blank cut to your lock.

My '81 has two keys as well but the ignition key only works in the ignition and the second key does the storage box behind the seat and the gas tank.

Thanx again guys! As far as I know, it's all still the original set of locks and ignition. I dropped the seat lock off today, maybe tomorrow I will try the ignition to see if they can get numbers or something out of it. Never thought of that, I just assumed they would have to make an impression or something and that wouldn't be too accurate for the other locks that are not as worn?? I did try the gas tank key awhile ago before it was lost, and it was a smaller key and definitely did not fit anything else.
    I appreciate the feedback!!
    Cheers!

Just to update on this.... I lucked out! The previous owner's parents called me yesterday and they found a set of keys. Turns out, they were the right ones!! One key fits the ignition, helmet/seat lock, and the security chain lock. The other key is for the gas cap.
Thanx for the quick feedback and I'm sure we will have many more questions as we get more into this bike.
    Cheers!
