I have recently ran into a definite charging issue but not sure what the culprit is. At low idle the bike runs at 12.6 but slowly starts dropping. I first checked out the rotor brushes and found that there was a lot of grease/possibly oil in with the coil and brushes, is this normal? or do I have a leak?
    bike is 82 xj750R seca

At low idle the bike runs off the battery. The charging system does not kick in before 2000 to 3000 rpms.( you probably already knew that)

When I pulled my stator there was not any build up of greasse or oil (only a powder almost like graphit) so you may have a leak.

so it looks like i think i have figured it out. It looks like it is the rectifier seeing as I am getting the right amount of voltage in but not out. Does this sound correct?

thanks Markie, this is actually what I did to figure out it is the rectifier. I am getting 9.8 in but there is no reading coming out of the rectifier. Knowing my luck I am missing something and again the bike wont be ready to ride whenever i feel the urge but all the smptoms seem to be pointing towards this at the moment lol. I also replaced the brushes for shts and giggles

check the plastic wire connector I spend two days looking for the short/charging problem. Sometime it worked sometimes it didn't. I found that the clip on the connector from the alternator was broken and did not lock the connector together. A simple cable tie around the connector keeps it locked together. I just cut the cable tie when I need to change things then replace and I'm good to go.
