which cylinder is #1?

Hi, I just got done refitting the cylinder head, but now I cant recall which cylinder is #1 to be able to put the plug wires back correctly. If sitting on the bike, is #1 on the left hand or right hand side?

Should be the left side as sitting on the bike.

As far as plug wires go, all you need to know is 2 and 3 are in the middle. Doesn't matter if you swap leads 1 and 4 (or 2 and 3 for that matter) as they both fire off the same coil.

Hold it ... Hold it ... Hold it!!!

How in the heck were you able to replace a Cylinder Head back on the Engine without being certain about which Cylinder was Number-1.

If you didn't have Number-1 at Top Dead Center for the reinstall of the Cam Chain and Cams ... you could be in for BIG Problems trying to get that Engine to turn-over.

Number-1 is the Left Cylinder
Viewed from the Riding Position
On the Clutch Lever Side.

 

Actually, as far as cam timing is concerned, you could use cyl 1 or 4 as TDC because they are both in sync.

 

I had the TDC mark on the crank aligned with the marks on the cams. I just couldnt remember which spark plug the #1 wire went to, far left or far right.

 

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I had to break the chain on my 650 cam, do you know what a repair link size or number would be?

Thank you, If I find one that takes a clip instead of the one you need to ping, do you think it would be safe to use?

 

Can't say I've ever seen a camchain with a split link before ??

 

I wouldn't use a "Detachable Master Link"

I'd make sure the Link was going to be able to handle 8~10K rpm's.

You got a lot ridin' on that Chain Link.

 

Then does the original link take a special tool to to ping it or is there a special way to make sure that is done right? Thanks

Yes, wasted spark.

 

The Chain gets a REAL Link which has Link Pins that are Peened-over ... (or "Mushroomed) to secure the Link permanently.
