If the ignition goes off when you unplug the ignition unit it HAS to be the ignition key unit.

Is it possible the contact plate inside the key unit is on backwards? Did you check the continuity of the switch when it was off the bike?

I took the whole ignition apart ..where you insert the key.. so there was no contact and everything still stayed on.. the contacts inside the switch were little dirty cleaned then up.. I figured it was the switch to.. but like I said disconnecting it and everything still stayed on..lights front and back .. green neutral.... does that help?

    Thxs.

Did you unplug the entire unit from the wiring loom?

No I did not .. figured when the switch was all apart there wouldn't be any contact on the plate and not causing the problem.. do you think the problem is still in the ignition switch...?

    Thanks ...

make sure the fuse holders aren't shorting against each other in the fuse box.
I've seen an XJ "come to life" when a fuse holder jumped out of its seat and touched another one.

More than likely - unplug the unit from the loom and see. If it's still "live" after that, then check what stereomind has said.

Ended up doing a temporary fix, put a toggle switch in the main line to kill the power since the key switch isn't doing it .. yep lets hope she doesn't light up.. way to nice out there not to be riding... have to get into the harness on some rainy day...

    Thanks for all the input...

When you say everything keeps going does that include the motor keeps running too? I had that problem on my 85 Maxim-X (Canadian) it turns out that there is a dual connector inside the headlight that can get so hot that it melts the plastic in between, shorts (burnt brown) and nothing would shut off until I disconnected the battery. This was years ago and the only thing I can remember (sort of) is that it was a white square shaped connector , think it was the female part ( who'd a guessed that).
I know it's different years and different bike but some times the Japs kept stuff the same from one bike to another.
    Good luck.

Sounds about right. I just cut and put separate connectors on so that they weren't close together anymore and the problem was fixed. Hope it's the right solution.
If you can, take some pics so that others can see what it is we're talking about.
    Good luck!
Just noticed you're in Cambridge, I'm in London. Ha! waddaya know eh!

Problem fixed, you were right on the money.. that white plug coming from the key switch which hooks up to the harness behind the head light was melted enough so it was shorting out, changed the plug and problem gone...
Sorry old plug thrown out.... no pic..
Saved me a big head ach and who knows its one of those things that are easly over looked..
Thanks again to eveybody with there input..
    London just down the road..

It was pure luck that it was the same issue, but that's what forums like this do. To get a pic under your name, start off with a photo host like FLICKR
    http://www.flickr.com/
Then upload some pics by selecting them from your hard drive. Once they are uploaded then come back to the forum and click on the profile box in one of your posts, on the left look for the box that says My Account Tools. Look for PERSONAL and under it click on Avatar. Now with Flickr open on one page and this forum in another page pick the picture from Flickr and go to all sizes, choose Thumbnail, when the picture changes size look for

    2. Grab the photo's URL:
Left click, select copy and come back here to the Avatar screen, then paste in the box that says

    Upload Avatar from a URL:
Click on save changes and if you did it right and I explained it right you should have a pic under your name.
    Hope that helps.

    Cheers, Graham
