I'll be doing mine here in the next couple of weeks. If it's like the last couple that I rebuilt, the hardest part is getting the circlip at the top out.
Find a way to support the bike, remove:
    front wheel
    front fender
    brake calipers
    forks
disassemble (here's where the circlip comes into play)
    clean
    replace all rubber parts
reassemble and fill with proper oil

I hear that on the circlip. Hey I have mine almost back together, there is a round rubber seal / gasket that I think goes between the air pressure collars and the top triple tree. At the top of the fork there is the clip, the air collar then the gasket / rubber seal that goes between the triple tree and the air collar. Is that how it goes back together?? Been riding since 1971 here, first Yamaha street bike though.

I also have the same type of forks on my xj, and will be doing mine in the next month or so. I will be taking A LOT of pictures and hopefully will be posting a step by step here.

Yes, the rubber spacer cushions go above the air collars, and the circlip fits into the small groove in the fork tube below the air collar........these items keep the air collar from moving around too much and uncovering the air passage hole in the chrome tube.

Thanks I kinda figured that where they went. Ive got kids and they mixed the parts up a little lol. Im rebuilding the calipers too, I may just polish the aluminum instead of repainting them. I like the aluminum look. Ive got the tank out for an airbrushed flame job too !!! cant wait to get it back. For those with speedometer issues it binds up inside the unit and can be easily fixed by taking it apart and oiling and working it loose from the inside of the speedometer. Mine works great now !!!
