Hello guys, I am new to the forum and new to xj bikes as well. I bought an 83 900RK from my bro-in law. The bike sat for 5 years. My question is, when i push the start button I have NO spark while it cranks when I let off the button it gives a short spark at the very end. I have tested coils, I've tried jumping the starter to try to eliminate the button everything has power, I just don't understand why I get that short spark at the end. ANY suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Bad gas?
Checked to see if the plugs are fouled?
    Done a tune up yet?

This is just testing for spark .....no gas involved...new plugs, I trimmed the coil wires back some to be sure I have good contact. I just tried wipping it over to see if it had spark and thats what I got just a short blast at the end of the crank. I've been reading around, does the headlight have to be plugged in ? didn't know if it has to complete a circut of sorts? Dunno, My bro-in law said he tried to jump it without a battery in it using a charger could that have burned something out?
