    Hi Schooter,
If your using windows vista or 7 there is a tool in accessories called snipping tool and this makes light work of screen cap.
If your using windows xp or previous using the printscreen (prt scr) button next to the scroll lock and pause/break keys will capture the screen to the clipboard at which point you open a graphics program and either create a new pic and paste the clipboard into it or look for a create new from clipboard selection.
There are third party screen cap progs for pre windows vista too. One i've used, freeware, is called gadwin printscreen which works a charm in xp.
That's the basics, hope it helps!

alt+PrtScn will screen grab only the active application, not the contents of the entire monitor, FYI...

Everybody here is correct, but I'll sum it up a little. If you're in Win7 or Vista, the snipping tool is useful for selecting specific sections of the screen you want to capture.

99% of the time, though, Alt+Prnt Scrn will do, since it captures only the current active window and not the whole screen like just pressing Prnt Scrn by itself does.

From there you can cut and paste directly into documents, or you can open a graphics editor like Paint. (Start>run>mspaint) It is the easiest and most primitive, and it will allow you to easily save the image as a bmp or jpg for uploading.
