I will say I'm with the guys above - I like it!

My only reservation is the dragonfly logo... doesn't really say motorcycle to me, and for some reason it irks me a tad... not that it's a deal breaker or anything...

As an option, what about a side profile shot of the XJ engine instead?
I'm sure someone's got a good picture somewhere of just the engine from the side, but for ideas
    Something like THIS
    Or THIS
    Or even THIS

i like that its not way obvious that its about yamaha motorcycles, adds to the exclusivity of it like if you know then you know. i don't really like the idea of hey its a motorcycle enthusiast group! but ill try and design something similar to what you want when i get a bit of free time

people you need to keep in mind the art work involved with these things, and the more art work the higher the cost.
try and stick to the KISS principle or you will find yourselves paying $15.00 for a patch ans $10.00 for a pin

I would NOT use the dragonfly logo. If you go to the website you will see that the the supplier of the this sites CMS has trademarked the logo.

Definitely a no no to use it without permission of the trademark owner and I would doubt they would authorize its use to a 3rd party. Keeping service marks, trademarks etc proprietary is the very reason for laying legal claim to the property. You don't want ANYONE else using them.

What if you flip the dragonfly upside down, or ad something to it. Then it is a different symbol and no longer copyrighted

Hey, whart about using the spiral tire that is specific to our bikes. You could show a front tire with the XJ logo in the center. I'd post a pic if I knew how to photo shop

But none of the site moderators have commented on the XJ trademark
    issue.
I haven't found an MC around here the I want to affiliate with so I have
nothing where the club patch should go on my vest.-looks damn odd too
    lol-
An xj patch would be just the ticket for me.

The dragonfly image that's on the site here belongs to the bulletin board program that this website uses
    DragonflyCMS

And, just to call peoples attention to it, at the bottom of every page here -- way down at the bottom, you'll find this:
"The logos and trademarks used on this site are the property of their respective owners"

    Thx Altus.
Read that some time ago and just forgot about it.

    SO..........................................I guess the conversation has
to stop at that. Too bad though. Given the commitment by
many XJ owners to their machines it seems a shame to leave it
at t-shirts and coffee cups . :D

It's not over, this just means we can't use the dragonfly logo.

As my idea, we can have a big "XJ" on top, with all of the engine cc sizes below it, and "Bikes" at the bottom of the patch so that every ride is recognized.

Furthermore, if the cc's are left white we can color in our engine size (for those that are unlucky enough to have only one bike:) )

What other ideas do people have? Let's make this happen

What about the below? It identifies us by the one thing we have in common, an XJ and then the "speedo" above gives engine sizes in CC's of every XJ we have on the board.

When you get a patch you can draw a red speedo needle to your engine size, and personalize it as such. If you've got multiple bikes, multiple patches :)

If we're gunna have the "XJ" in it, could we maybe do XJ'S or XJ-S so us XS400's get in there too :)

I'm pretty handy with photoshop and illustrator, i'll whip up something sometime. Do we want simple or complicated for stitching? :)

    Here's a couple I whipped up.

The first one is more realistic of a patch, the second is an embellishment just for fun that wouldn't translate well off screen.

If we're gonna have a pin or patch for this site, why not just use the logo for the site?

    My two cents worth,

I wouldn't feel "proud" about wearing the site logo, it looks like it was made in MS Paint in the late '90s. Technology and design has moved on.

This site rocks for the sheer amount of knowledge on here, but, and no offense to anyone, the design and the actual forum are way outdated.

I disagree with that, the design of the bikes has withstood the test of time quite well and many appear relatively "modern" (or whatever you want to call it) when parked next to newer bikes.

And if we're taking it that way, then let's have the patch made using materials and technology available only in the late 70's and early 80's.

The point I'm trying to make is that the site "logo" barely passes as such and surely would look worse on a patch.

    I agree.

I really do love this site, but the logo is "chucky cheesey" and would translate poorly offline. I really don't intend to offend anybody either.

Did I mention that I love the site? :D

i really dont think theres a problem with the patch i came up with. i mean if you want me to skew a few curves to make it look less like the dragonfly logo, which i already think it looks very little like, i can. the radiation logo is just corny, and yeah the xj bikes logo on its own is really cheesy.

im ready to just order a patch on my own of the one i made that most people seemed to like, and if anybody else wants one, then they can do the same.

but seriously, we need an xj patch. but how would you translate one of those radiation with glowing accents things into a patch?

every logo/design/whatever has been done before nothing is original these days. ill make a big dick slapping somebody's face into a patch and we'll get sued over copying somebody's design. we shoud just pick one everybody likes and roll with it. we're not trying to trademark it, make money off it, or even mark a club after it, its just a design to make a patch out of.

You obviously didn't read the words included with the post. Also, MS Paint looks great when printed out.

It was just a suggestion, and I was hoping for open and constructive criticism. The "logo" can be changed at the drop of a hat, and it's constructed so that it will print properly and not pixelated.

    Anyway, enjoy your pin

    Shnuffy,
that second pics is just plain "bitchin"
(A term in use when I started riding 30 yrs ago).
It would make a great pin or patch.
    But forget it.
There has been talk of this for years and so far nothing
    has come of it.
The xj legal dept. has been silent on the subject so any
attempt (s) will prob be met with severe penalties.lol

I'm all for a patch, and think simpler is better.

I'm against using the dragonfly logo, even in the modified form, as it has nothing to do with XJs. No offense to you, but not my style.

Let's come up with some ideas with what we actually want on the patch and get the people who are good with Photoshop to make it.

Ideally, I want it to say "XJ Bikes" and have something unique to the XJs of the period. (YICS hole? haha)

here lets make this simple then.

it says xj so people know what it is, its got something specific to our bikes, and it doesn't infringe on any intellectual property rights.

print em up. ill buy the first one.

So, what do the red circle thingies have to do with the xj's? I'm somehow missing that. I don't see anything wrong with the site's logo, and it's a sign we'd all know and recognize--we're all posting on here, aren't we?!?

I'm not about to buy a patch that has red spikey circley thingies on it that look more like a satanic rock band logo than anything else, to MY eye. I don't really care what others think of that.

OK. now it's about time we heard from the moderators from this site about where we stand on the legal ramifications if we are to go with this sites logo as a pin and or patch.

we have had some good ideas and some not so good, (bearing in mind the parameters i set out at the start).
as someone else said on this post "we are not using it to make money"
it is a symbol for us as a recognition of our bikes.

Honestly, I don't think we need to worry ourselves with too much of the legal stuff. We're not a large group and the visibility will be minimal. We could probably use the Disney logo and never hear about it again.

Here are some more options. Constructive criticism welcome!

First two are options, the third is a web-only for-fun-only version for an avatar or whatever you want to do with it.

it pretty much seems like what its going to take is somebody just saying to hell with it, making a design, buying a bunch of them, then selling them to members who want them. otherwise the argument over legality and design is just going to rage on and go nowhere.

I like the 3rd one. The color scheme is decent. Nice work. And yes. I am sure if someone has the capability and the cash to make some up I am sure they would sell out on this site. I would like a patch for my vest fo sure.

Perhaps even incorporate a plug for the web site on the patch xjbikes.com

I read through this entire thread today and for some reason got the urge to go on photoshop and throw somethin simple together. It is not patch able to be made in bulk due to the fact that I made it so each person could have Maxim or Seca, their username, and engine size. Let me know what ya think.
