Fabricating collar on shifter shaft?

    Inside the shifter cover of my 1982 XJ550 Maxim there is what appears to be a nylon collar about 2" long that slides over the shaft. It appears that its only purpose might be as a spacer to hold the washer in place over the oil seal. XJ4Ever doesn't have them and my local Yahama dealer says that no warehouse shows them in stock, which he takes to mean that they're no longer available although they are not yet officially discontinued.

    Mine is broken in half. It might be possible to glue the two parts back together, but has anyone used some other material to replace this part or possibly fabricated one?

    I have a problem with my shift lever as well. Maybe its the same thing as yours. The actual shifter rod coming out of the case is sloppy and is leaking a little oil. It seems as if there is a bearing or something missing. I haven't really looked into it too deep yet but just wondering if anyone else has had that problem. Welcome baytonemos! Great to see another minnesotan on here.

    I bought the bike not running last weekend and have since pretty much torn it apart so, no pics for awhile.

    I've attached a parts diagram of the shifter that I received earlier today from XJ4Ever. At least you'll be able to see what's supposed to be there.

    The broken part on my shifter is item #10.

    OK, well, that's weird. There's ghost in the machine, I guess.

    In any case, here's what I'm trying. I bought a 5/8" nylon hose barb splicer at the hardware store and trimmed it to length. The inside diameter is very close and, although it's not as thick-walled as the original, I see no reason that it won't work.

    For what it's worth, I bought it at Ace. It's made by Watts and the part number is PL-526. Photo attached.

    Can you measure it (precisely)....I'd guess it's a round dimension like 12mm ID x 18mm OD x 30mm long.

    one of my suppliers has almost every size I could dream up.

    It's actually 20mm OD, 12mm ID, and 35mm long.

    Just out of curiosity, does that part get subjected to heat extremes? Would the hardware piece turn into goo if it gets too hot? Wondering if it may adhere to the shaft and make things worse.
    Just a thought.

    I'm going to defer to the experts on this. My guess, however, is that it doesn't get too hot, but that's just based on the appearance of the grease and gunk inside the shifter cover. It just doesn't look to me like anything has been "baked" on there.

    Also, a quick Googling of a few sites suggests that the melting point of all common types of nylon begins about 417°F and goes way up from there.
