Ok, here’s my story. Today I was going to pull the carbs off and bench sync them. Just for the fun of it I thought I’d try to start it. It cranked slow but, after awhile started to catch. Wahoo!! She fired up! Wasn’t running to good but now I don’t have to pull them for a bench sync. I fixed my sync tool this morning, so looks like a good day. Wait, what’s that gas smell? To heavy just for a rich start. Look under the carbs …. Leaking from #3. ”again” Pull the carbs anyway tighten the bowl screws. Didn’t seam to be loose enough for that big a leak. Well I have them off I’ll go ahead and bench sync them that’s when I found the fuel tube between carbs #2 and #3 loose enough to spin with my fingers.

Anyway to fix this without breaking the carbs apart?

    Thanks Skeet

I was hoping some of the Guru’s would say something like that. Fuel safe RTV or tank patch. I don’t want to split the carbs apart.

If you half-ass fixing that leak ... you will regret not taking the time to do it right.

You must split that rack and repair that leak.
If the Barrel has O-rings ... Put on new O-rings.

If the Piece is NOT a Tee and is Plastic ... replace it with a used Aluminum Barrel and O-ring Seals.

If the Part is a Tee ... and the Tee is Plastic ...
Repair the Outside Diameters of the Tee by Installing a length of Tight Fitting ... "Heat Shrink Tubing" ... on each end.

Cut the Heat Shrink to be 1/2 Inch Longer than the end of the Tee.
    Shrink the Wrap.
Cut the Wrap 1/8th Inch longer than the Tee.

    Do BOTH Sides.
PRESS the two Carbs back together with the Tee held in place such that it will not have to be adjusted upon completion.

You have to have a FUEL Tight Seal or you'll leak again.

Once you split the carbs apart, don’t you need some kind of special balance tool to get then back at the together and at the same level or some such thing? It’s not that I’m unwilling, just have done that Before.

Or is it as simple as just unscrewing the carbs changing the o-rings and putting them back together?

    Thanks in advance

The "balance" is usually called carb synchronization, and you'll have to do that whether you separate the carbs or not. The tool can be built for a couple dollars, and you'll need it anytime you play with the carbs or adjust the valves. Don't let it scare you, it's not hard to do.

What I meant to say was “do I need any special tools or equipment to do this”. Don’t the bowl levels have to match or something. If not and it’s just take the screws out, split them, fix the leak, and then screw it back together. I’m in here tomorrow AM!

just some good fitting screwdrivers, the rack screws can be tight
you should only have to take two at the most, theres a little wiggle room on the brackets just snug the screws and then on a flat place like a table saw or the kitchen counter line up all the inlet or outlet sides, snug the screws a little more and make sure the throttle works smooth
if the throttle shafts aren't in line the throttle can bind

Not unless you think that the Un-alignment Fairy sneaks-in and moves the holes drilled on the Rack Bars.

You build the Rack back together and leave the Fasteners just loose enough to meke some alignments.

Then you put all fout Carbs ... The TOPS of all four carbs ... without the Diaphragms and Tops on .... lines-up on the edge of a LEVEL.

The Level holds them all "Aligned" while you finish tightening alll the Fasteners.

    No Sweatski.
    Badda-bing; badda boom!

take the time to fix it right. i had the same problem on my 550 where the transfer tube from 3-4 was leaking gas. i took it apart and what did i find? the PO actually took the carbs apart, and instead of replacing the o-ring that was leaking he just wrapped it with teflon tape and shoved it back together. i replaced all the o-rings just to be safe and now no more leaking.

When yo get ready to join the Carbs after they are serviced, ... you'll feel like you need two more hands getting the Carb Linkage Spring-loaded Sync Adjusters all in place without them sproinging-loose and getting lost.

Split a tooth-pick and wedge the little bugger open,
Put the Bodies close -- right, ... and then pull them out after every thing hunky-dorey!
