I purchased a unit through Ebay , it got lost in the post & the NZ guy sent me another one. that was about 3yrs ago. The 750RL has done a lot of K's since then , 5000ks in 10 days in October just gone & its not missed a beat.
When the 900 goes on the road it will have one off these units too.

I'm not that confident doing my own work & used to have a local guy that did reasonably priced work. Sadly he has moved on, so I might have to learn by doing.
Just researching how to trouble shoot my ignition problems - looks like TCI. Had a TCI issue a few years ago & the abovementioned mechanic sorted it by replacing with a Suzuki GS850 unit. Said that unit was well understood & easily rebuilt if it failed again.
Now I'm thinking of going back to original equipment & have just emailed a guy in NZ (found on this forum) on pricing.
Gotta get back on a bike this year. Been off for 2 years & am slowly going mad.
Where are you based?

 

hi skeeta, i am based in marsden (southside of brissie) so not that far from you, a couple of hours good running from an early start and could be having smoko by 10 easily. if you need test parts for diagnosing let me know what, as i have 3 bikes nearly complete plus my daily ride, so lots of parts. looking forward to catching up with someone from this site.

G'day there, I have been on another XJ mailing list for about 10 yrs but see there are more Aussies here. My'83 XJ50P has been down for a few years but is just about up and on the road again. I bought proper Yamahaha fork seals, but they were too small for my bike. got aftermarket ones that fit, but now wondering how much oil should go in the forks. Did the W.A. Police Bikes have non-standard forks? The front brakes dont seem to match any picture for the 750s either.

 

Hello sandgroper...i saw your name on th members who's on list and wondered if it = WA....welcome.. Another member.. cds1984 in perth has one.. go back 1 page in this thread. There are a coupla of NZ 750P here too.
Th 750P is a 750 in a 900 frame or some version of that so far as i know, or maybe it's th forks,wheels and brakes.

 

Hi sandgroper I've got a supplemental manual for an 83 XJ750RL, according to my manual the oil capacity is metric 286+/-4cm/3cubed or
[10.1 +/-0.14 Imp. Oz or 9.67+/- 0.14 US Oz]
5W motor oil recommended according to the manual, most people I know of
run a heavier specific fork oil.
I checked the manual for the 80 to 82 models and there are three different oil capacities quoted for the XJ750 RH and RK the XJ 750 J and XJ750 [UK] so I dont know how much help this is.
The 750RL is the same as the 900's except for engine capacity.
Got any pics? the only 750P's Ive seen were the seca style bikes.

 

Thanks Gunna. I have just uploaded a photo to this album, but will see if it attaches as well. My fork seal were 2mm wider diameter (inside and out) than the standard model for the XJ 750K

 

Cool, definately a special or someone went to a lot of trouble to paint the frame white. It's interesting the different spec's for the bike from normal.

 

Looks like a NZ cop bike... You guys got the 900 we had the 750.

 

yeeha, finally going away for a weekend ride with a few mates to my favourite watering hole. been about 7 (yes seven months) since i have had a good weekend ride (money has been bloody tight) but now its wash the bike general check over throw the leg and head for the hills.
those familiar with south east queensland will know this run.
browns plains 8.00am beuadesert, rathdowney. to the summerland way to kyogle then casino, bruxner hwy to tenterfield then up the new england to wallangarra and cross the rail lines to jennings. staying the night and drinking copius amounts of bourbon with a few good mates at the best little pub (my opinion) a man could ever hope to find. after a topline breakfast its head back to brissie via the heifer creek run into gatton then home. (Yeah i know you just wish you could join in). about 1200k's for the weekend round trip should get the juices flowing again nicely

Oh Truckerbikes you've got my mouth watering.
Just a couple of weeks ago I drove to Toowoomba from Grafton via Casino & Tenterfield.
On the return trip I was looking at that stretch of road through a biker's eyes & planning my next trip to Toowoomba by bike.
Can't wait.

i bet it would be great tooling around on a bike there just checking out the sights i would get run over since im not used to driving on that side of the road

 

thanks for the sentiments guys, cutlass it is beautiful country with rolling green hills top open country roads and plenty of sites to see along the way.
we will be cruising along at about 90 to 110 klm/hr so an early start is required to make jennings before nightfall as we will be making plenty of stops along the way, (smoke, drink, food, and toilet) plus a chance to stretch the legs and rub some life back into our butts.
as for riding on the wrong side of the road, i saw in a magazine once of a lady rider in an other country that rode on the other side of the road to her native country and to keep her on the correct side of the road for that country she was riding in she had a sign taped across the handlebars keep left. a simple but effective way of reminding yourself which side of the road to be on.
skeeter once we have done the tune up on your ride we can hook up at casino and run the bruxner there and back and then head our own way when we get back to the pacific hwy, but that run won't be until sept 3&4.
thats when i officially become and old fart (50) lol :lol: and should have a large number of bikes and friends to join in the party. thanks knuts for the bourbon sentmiment and i will be, have no fear of that.

hey there fellas,

I picked up a 1983 XJ650 a couple of months ago. it's my first bike and i'm loving it so far.

This site helped heaps with a few teething problems but now she's running sweet, i've got heaps of mods in mind, mainly aesthetic, so i'll be around.

I'm in the city in Sydney.

My XJ900 is my first adult bike (used to ride smaller bikes in my teens - then nothing for years).
I think the XJ is a great first bike. Plenty of go but not stupid amounts, & relatively easy to work on yourself.
I've been considering getting a smaller one as a project bike once mine is registered. Glad you're enjoying yours.
