Do you recommend replacing all the studs when you have removed the head?

    Yep.
    Get rid of everything Stock.

    I'd do:
4-Hardened cap Screws for the Intake manifolds
    4-Stainless (for 1 + 4)

Once you get the Exhaust Studs and Nuts off and out ... there's all-kinds of Fasteners ... better than Stock.

Since the Gasket didn't come-off "Clean" ... you should order a New One.

The Stuff around the Long Head Bolts is like Heat Shrink.
The "Tubes" protected the Head Bolts from binding while the Head was put-on during the Factory built.

If there's a lot of it making a mess and you need it out of there, ... that's why the Good Lawd made Shop Vacs.

I have never lost a Chain off the Crank. (Knock, knock).

While you have the Head off and can conveniently do the observation ...
RECORD the SIZES of ALL the Shims and where they belong.

Don't send the Head out with the Shims loose in the Buckets.
You might have some be lost.
They might fall out and get replaced incorrectly.

    Take them out.
Read the Number on the Back
Write it down and where it goes.
If you can't read the Number ... Mic the width.
If you dont have a Mic ...
Clean it with a blast of Carb Cleaner and use a Sharpie to write where it goes.
    1. 2, 3, 4 ...
    1x, 2x, 3x, 4x

Im wondering about the base gasket tho... it seemed to be separating between the cylinders and the crankcase when i was removing the head.. Not alot, just a hair... is that something to worry about?
and i know i should know this but how would you clean out what has fallen into the cylinders, around the crown of the pistons, aside from vacuuming

i figured id take the shims out, i was picturing the guy not noticing them, turns the head up, shims start bouncing off the concrete floor, he hands me a pile of shims and shrugs..

should i replace the rubber o-rings that sit in the cylinder bank under the head?
should i replace the YICS o-rings?

You've lived a sheltered life, Rick.

    Replace all those "O" rings.

You don't have to do anything with the Lower End unless it was leaking before you pulled the Head.

You'll be taking-on a lot of work that you don't need to do.

Replace the O-rings and YICS O-rings.
Do some Tuning on the Block.
Pull the O-rings and Clean-out the YICS Holes.

Pull the YICS Hex Plugs and Clean-out the YICS Passage.
Its like a Smooth Bore Shotgun Barrel.

Other things to consider when the Head is off:
    Valve Seals
    Lapping-in the Valves
Cleaning-Off and putting a nice finish on the Piston Crowns.

yea so im taking pictures but havent posted them... the head is at a neighbor's were drilling out and tapping for the intake bolts. i have cleaned off the gasket material and the carbon from the piston crowns with one of those Roloc bristle pads, that things great... i was going to do the deck and crowns with 1000 grit paper is that enough of a polish? and once i get the head back ill clean that up and lap the valves and install new seals.. its going, slowly, but going..
