Hey everybody how goes it? Alright so I just joined the site today all the way from sunny Iraq. I am buying a 1982 XJ750 Maxim at the end of the week and I need ideas for a seat mod I was thinking of.

I will try to explain this one as well as I can but bear with me!!! I want to get rid of the stock double seat and go to a solo so I can have that nice open fender look, BUT my wife would like me to keep the double o so that if she wants to ride along she can. I would prefer not to put a bitch pad on either. I was wondering about setting up interchangeable seats. So when I am riding alone I can run solo and have the fender showing, but I could change out to a double on a frame that would fit where the solo bolts in but still sits above the fender.

So thats about what I have in mind right now. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Wife pics up the bike this weekend and I wont even get to see it until I get home in just over a month so I have plenty of time to brainstorm. Thanks again everybody!!! Have a good one.

First welcome, keep your head down, and make it back in one piece.

The fenders on these are half plastic. Atleast on my 650. So I don't know if you're wanting to expose the factory fender.

For your seat idea you could mount up a solo seat and then some sort of bracket that another seat could clip into under it.

Well once you get home I think you will be surprised by what you find under the seat. I don't think it's the pretty chrome fender you are anticipating. you could easily make an interchangeable seat though if you can find another seat pan from a bike that fits yours and just chop the back off. Not sure how you would secure it but I'm sure it can be done.

Yeah I should have mentioned I will be swapping out the factory rear fender. just dont know with what yet. I will have a better idea once I actually check it out in person. Buddy of mine out here just came up with the idea to custom fabricate a bracket that held the double seat above the fender with out having the stock mounting plate over the fender, basically just hovering the back seat.
    Thanks again for any ideas!!

Fab up a cowl if you can.
This is on a sports bike, but see how the cowl just covers up the passenger part of the seat making it look like a one up seat. Just remove it for two up.

Thanks for the tip Maxim-X, I will have to look into that one. Might open up a whole new list of possibilities for this build.

Just a suggestion even though you said you didn't go the route of a bitch pad, but they make bitch pads with suction cups on them that are easily removable. That opens up the possibilities of a solo seat without it being fabbed or removeable.
