Plug wire and coil

    Can the plug wires be replaced without changing the coil on
    a 81 xj650

    yes and no, chacal sells NGK splicers i think, you can cut off all but a inch of the old wire and put a pin in them and push a new wire on the pin or you can grind away the part of the coil that holds the old wire and glue in a new one
    they all work, i use the pin

    The suggested distance for the splicers is four inches, actually. Of course, if the break is closer to the coil than that...

    You can , its a bit involved and if not done right you will ruin your coils. Read through this article about XS coils, the XJ coils are similar.

    You can get some used ones it would be easier. I have done this on a XJ750, I'll look for replacemants if I have to do it again.

    Would any make of splice kit work. I would guess it
    is available from automotive parts store.
    dumb question here... could an automotive wire be used if
    one of the proper size is used.

    Save some Money, ...

    Just go to a Junk Yard.
    Find a Beemer, VW, Porsche or an Audi and grab the 4 Longest Plug Wires.
    You'll get the BEST Stainless Core Wires available.

    Do the Coil Surgery.

    Cut the wires off flush with the coils & insert these using the drill chuck, you need about 6 or 8 g.
