What's the right lube for the speedometer cable?

    Thanks!

Here's how I lube my cables, wrong or right, it works for me.
I remove the cable from the bike and hang it in the shop vice (don't over tighten the jaws and wreck the cable) then I tape a small funnel to the top opening of the cable and add some motor oil ( I use synthetic for cold weather as it don't get thick when it's cold) Then leave it sit and drain down into the cable until it comes out the bottom.
There are cable lube devices on the market that work, but I do what's worked for me for years.

I've been using Bel-Ray multi-lube for my cables the last few years, and have been very happy with it. Doesn't seem to thicken up like motor oil does after a while.

Won't the cable pull out of the sheath on an XJ? On ones that do that I pull it and put a shot of chain lube into the sheath. You could also just dip the cable in some 30W oil.

Sorry, didn't read carefully enough. I was thinking control cables; I still use Tri-Flow though.

Speedo and tach cable maintenance, Fitz' style:

Dismount the cable; lay out a "red carpet" of shop towels and pull out the inner and lay it on them. Flush with brake cleaner, roll over to a clean spot on the towels and douse with lubricant of choice. I use Tri-Flow, SAE30 motor oil will work too; anything BUT WD40.

Meanwhile, flush the outer sheath with brake cleaner until it comes out clean and hang it up to dry.

Reinsert clean, oily inner cable into fresh clean outer sheath; put a dab of grease (just a dab) on the little stop collar on the inner cable.

Use some Armor-All or Mothers' Back-To-Black on the outside of the assembly and reinstall.
