I am cleaning out the carbs on my newest addition to my bike family, an 82 650 seca.
I cant tell whether the starter jets in the carb bowls are clear. Tried using
carb cleaner and compressed air but still wondering if there is any way to prove the jets are ok/open ?

Only way to know is to hold them up to a light. If you have not removed them then a small nylon bristle can be inserted to check. Do not use wire. It will damage the jet. It is best to remove the jets and soak them over night in carb dip. You do not want to soak the carb bodies in carb dip. They have orings inside which would be destroyed by carb dip. To remove the brass jets care must be taken to avoid damage. Use a large screwdriver that spans the width of the jet. In our links section in the DIY area there are some web sites with directions and pics of the parts with their respective names and placement.

The starter jets are not removable, and the passage makes what appears to be a 90-degree turn below the jet (in the bowl body). So you have to clean it from both directions (through the top of the jet and then through the passage hole the enters into the well of the bowl) with a thin, stiff wire. About the only way I found to verify that it's clear is to take the extension tip on the carb cleaner spray can and stick it firmly into the jet and then spray....if fluid come out into the bowl (through the passage below the jet) then all's clear------if not, throw some more tools and curse some more and continue cleaning........

Hold it away from your face and aim it so you can see the stream of Carb Cleaner come shooting out of the little siphon tube well. The stream of Carb Cleaner should shoot out of the well in a tight spray.

If it does not shoot out in a very tight spray you'll have to do some clearing-out, with an appropriate tool, to get the Carb Cleaner to blow it out.

If the Carb Cleaner does not blow out of there in a tight stream ... and, after an initial > gentle < probing of the metering port, with a cleaning tool ... >[Welder's Tip Cleaning Tool - $4.00 @ Set - Welding Supply or Hardware Store]< ... BOIL the Float Bowl so that the boiling water helps soften-up what ever is clogging-up the works.

Remove from water. (Tongs) Wrap the mating surface a few times on a level surface protected by a few sheets of newspaper to prevent marring the BOWL.

Quickly try a shot of cleaner? Tight exiting stream? Yes? Cleaned. NO? Probe with tool; re-spray until Carb Cleaner sprays out of there fast.

    Won't unclog?

Apply Nail Polish Remover to the inside hole with soaked Q-tip and fill-up the narrow port ... let that sit for an hour.

Well now that I understand we are talking about the starter jet and not the pilot jet (Sorry about that..Duh!) if you use a rubber tipped air gun you can get a seal and blast the gunk out. On this jet you can use a small wire, just don't dig around in there with it. But the best way to be is as was said , seeing the stream of Berryman's B12 shoot out the other end.

finally got the starter jets clear with the help of a .008 steel guitar
string after I had exhausted all chemical cleaning methods. I only wish I
had followed your advice about holding the bowl away from ones face.
As I squirted carb cleaner into the passage I recieved a backblast which
travelled 2ft and hit me in the eye. very unfun. Had to flush my eye
for 10 min or so and my eylid swelled up like like I took a good punch.
No lasting damage except to my common sense. Don't let this happen to you, wear safety glasses!!

Hummm... never thought about using an E string! D'addario I hope!
Sorry about the eye, I have done that too and it smarts! I now wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when cleaning carbs.
Rick I like your idea of boiling the bowls. I might try that on the next carbs I clean.

Getting a face full of Carb Cleaner blowing-out those metering ports is one of those little gags all the Yamaha Design Engineer's probably still laugh about at the Yamaha Company picnic.

Those zany Rising Sun engineer's all get a big kick out of that one!

    "Burz-eye"!

Another reason to always ask for Flatwound strings-
They don't score yer' carb jets.
