Air leak from rubber boots carb to head

    went to the dealer and almost fell over with the cost, tried chacal and no luck. so can i use rubber hose say from a gas tank or some other hose that meets the same diameter ?

    what kind of air leak do you have, check out this post.

    does it help any?

    carb prob solving

    if not you can gently warm electrical tape and wrap it tightly around the inlet rubbers. this can solve an air leak as a temparary measure until you get new rubbers.

    the intake rubber has cracks in them, as chacal suggested, im going to try some black rtv first.
    im in the middle of moving to a different house so it will be a coulpe weeks before i can give any results.

    I recently heard of stretcing someting over them, like a bollon or something stronger and then RTV'n it. good luck. Seen a nice set on ebay yesterday

    black electrical tape should do the job. wrap it around couple of times.

    don't use silicon sealers. they don't last long and you run the risk of disintegrating and being sucked in through a crack and right down into the cylinder.

    i used permatex #2 and coated the boots. that lasted a year. tape was the next choice.

    Try hoops cut from a mountain bike (Cycle) inner tube, slipped over the boots and secured with RTV sealant. It looks neat to!

    that's what i meant! (I knew ballons was a weak dumbass thing) do you have to cut a hole for the vacume nipples?

    I bought a new set for my 82 XJ 650 w/ YICS and am gonna post the old ones on ebay. Not sure if they will fit yours...they are orientated <#1 // \\4#>

    They are finely aged...have some outer weather cracks, but doesn't seem like they are done all the way through.

    1FASTHOE you should check the compatability w/ Chacal and get these! I"m guessing they don't fit cause I also have the 82 RJ and for these things, IT SUCKS

    If not a YICS engine, orientation will be as follows: (from guru Chacal)

    the non-YICS (1980-81 and 1982 XJ650RJ Seca) left side (cylinders #1 and #2) manifolds differ from the YICS (1982-84) manifolds in the orientation of their mounting:

    * non-YICS engines have the intake manifold mounting bolt holes in the cylinder head aligned in this manner:

    <#1 \ \ \ \ #4>

    * YICS engines have the intake manifold mounting bolt holes in the cylinder head aligned in this manner:

    <#1 / / \ \ #4>

    This is why the left side (cylinders #1 and #2) intakes differ between the YICS and non-YICS engines, and why they are the same for the right side (cylinders #3 and #4) in-between all 650 non-Turbo engines!
