Is there an easy way to tell the difference between XJ's? I have coming to me an '82 XJ550 for free from a buddy and i believe its a 550, only because in the crappy picture my buddy gave me, the bike is chain driven. Is there any other ways of determining what kind of bike it is...easily?

Chain drive basically means 550 if it was originally shipped to America. I think I've heard of 400, and 600 XJ/FJs that were chain drive, but for 82, 650s and 750s were all shafties.

    Exactly. If it's a chain-driven US market Yamaha 4-cylinder from the '80s it's a 550, unless it's a Radian.

Plus the way to tell the difference between the 650 and 750 is the 650 only has one front brake rotor. The 750 has 2.
